Default Check engine light

I have a 98 Civic EX Coupe. my check engine light goes on and I get it checked out, turns out the gas cap is faulty or some ish(not sealing) and I'm told to buy a new gas cap for $48.00, well being the poor college student I am, I deem this an unnecessary expense, so I make some calls and talk to a buddy who has a 97 Civic Coupe...not sure the model, anyway...he gives me his gas cap and we celebrate hard that night. umm...oh yeah, the check engine light is still on...what should I do?

did you reset your ecu?
try resetting it first with the new gas cap
if the check light still turns on after, try one of the above statements
