Did it come on, and stay on? Or did it extinguish after a sort?

Sometimes a sensor will temporarily go out of sorts, and then clear out by itself.
For example, An O2 sensor can become sooted during the initial cold-run of the day, set an event code and then clear out once warmed up.

GM had a scanner tool which could be tied to the OBD port and would record all perameters either for a pre-determined time, or could be triggered by the driver if the lamp came on. It worked out well; and solved a good deal of these on/off Check Engine light complaints.
