Adding a tachometer to DX
DX model doesn't come with a tach and I am planning to add one to it. Is it a job that any mechanic can do it? When shopping for tach, does the brand really matter in terms of accuracy?
but if I do that, the odometer will be different and I think I will need to file additional paperwork to DMV for it? I saw those from autometer but I went for the one from Summit at prostreetonline. Would that be bad in terms of accuracy? (I don't really care how it looks). Is it easier to install a new cluster?
The redline for the D16Y8 (EX) is 7200, and the redline for the D16Y7 (DX) is 7100. So not that much difference.
And no, it would be the same for accuracy.

Yeah like everyone says pick up the Ex/Si cluster ...
looks better & doesn't attract as much attention, unless you like the big *** shift light from the moster tach blinding you

I have a 5" autometer and I like it, some people say its rice but when you're revving high its definatly functional for accuracy. I have an lx cluster w/ tach too and I like to compare the readings I get from both tachometers and see how much the stock one is off. Its more than you'd think.
On the other hand, if its just a daily driver theres no need for an autometer. Just get an Ex cluster.

Don't get a big tach, just get an OEM cluster.

Yes, plug and play. I have an EX cluster in my CX. Clean, neat, simple install. I did swap the speedometer from my old cluster to the new to keep the mileage accurate. Very simple to swap the speedometer over. Hardest part is finding a cluster to buy in good shape. I recommend the EX cluster due to th similar redlines between the EX and DX.

Exactly. They come in a EG Si hatchback, or an EX coupe, or ferio.

Not on the EK. Redlines for EX and SI are different. I'm assuming he has an EK based on the original poster's user name.

ok I just got myself a 99 Civic EX gauge cluster and I assume that the EK EX and DX have similar redline and drops right in (I was getting confused with the later posts). Please confirm.
Regarding where to get the tach, I remembered I saw a 5 inch one by Autometer and it is around 80 dolllars. However, I don't know if the wiring comes with it. I originally just wanted to add a tach as it is cheaper but it probably will cost more labor to install and so I decided to just go get the EX cluster.
Would any regular mechanic shop be able to install that no problem? The seller would adjust the milage for me so I guess I don't even need to swap the speedo.

Yes to all of the questions above. You might want to consider installing yourself. If you've got a stubby phillips to access the cluster bezel screws, the rest is a piece of cake.
Search around HT for past posts about swapping the clusters out.

The black plastic bezel has two snaps near the guage cluster face. Try not to break those snaps. Its not a big deal if it does brake. The cluster has two or three big molex plugs in the back, it fits only in its own plug on the new cluster.
If you want to swap speedos, the acrylic face unsnaps at like 8 points in the back of cluster housing. Then remove the face, unscrew the guage , and swap in your old speedo. Be careful of the green plastic electric connection sheet as u remove/install the speedos.
Its really easy if you like tinkering.
Good luck.
I have an EX cluster in my 97 DX right now. I also have an SI cluster to put in once I do my swap, hehehe............................

Thanks. I found a website that taught you how to change the bulbs of the cluster and basically it says that there are two screws in front of the cluster face for the bazel and three screws for the cluster. So after I unscrew everything and pull it out, are the wiring hard? I saw that there are two sets of wires and I guess I just plug each set back to the new one at the same position? Please let me know.
