cutting springs.
ok before the flamers start, i do not plan to do this, and never have.
a friend of mine cut his springs to lower his car and he just keeps telling me to do it. I just think that is an awful idea, it just sounds bad.
What kind of negative effects does cutting springs bring? any horror stories from anyone that tried it?

not gonna do it, as i said it sounds just so stupid, but i want to know the side effects so i can tell him to get it done right and mabey he will listen

lol, i like the part after jumping on a trampoline, when you are on solid ground and try jumping and you dont anywhere

Theres a right way and a wrong way of doing this.
Wrong way, hacksaw/any other kind of cutting tool, and just cut where you want and leave it.
Right way, cut with a torch then melt the ends to become level. I did it this way and havent had any problems for 2 years. You cut the exact same spot that you do on each spring. For me it was the area where the top spring starts and one right under. So there all the same size.

ive hacksawed many bolts and **** and never ever got them the same size or close to level, so i could imagine doing springs with a hacksaw as being very uneven

Springs have a downward sprial with them. If you cut it with a hack then youll have the downward facing up and it wont be level. You could cut the same spot but it wont be flat. Thats what a torch is used for.

I've seen it done before, and hell i've even cut springs for people--but didn't do it on my car. Cutting springs is the HARDCORE budget racer way to lower your car.
A cosmetic solution yet a suspension set back.

im not gonna do it to mine because i have 207k on mine, they creak and bounce already so im just gonna upgrade (since they need replacing anyway)
you can cut level with a hacksaw... just need to create a level groove and let the hacksaw do the rest of you gotta keep the hacksaw straight..... then you can use an angle grinder or a file to smooth it out
I don't see a problem with cutting with a hacksaw. Actually, this is probably preferred over an oxy/acetylene cutting torch since the cut will be more precise and you won't introduce heat. A cut-off wheel will probably be better, since spring steel will dull your hacksaw blade quickly. Just be sure to cut the same location on all of the springs, then use oxy/acetylene to heat the spring near the area you cut and bend the coil so that the spring sits flat.
The major issue with cutting the spring is that you would be lowering the ride height while not increasing the spring rate, causing the shock to bottom or hit the bump stops. If the spring is progressive, you may be able to cut the softer side of the spring to get more stiffness. Cutting springs are bouncy because most people dont heat the cut coil and bend it so that the spring end is flat, and also due to the weak factory springs. I did this exact thing and my car was bouncy. I would not cut my springs again.

There is absolutely no good way to cut springs. Hacksaw, Torch, nail clippers, it doesn't matter. If you cut your springs the retension rates go all off, and the ride is super bouncy. The car will bottom out all the time, not to mention it is extremely adverse for the handling of the car. The only thing it really does is make the car look a little cooler, but that is at the cost of messed tires, not to mention totally abusing the shocks/struts.
couple suspension books ive read have said cutting .5-1 coils off ur springs wont hurt. and can actualy make your car handle a bit better because of the lower center of gravity. but i say why bother when u can buy tein s-tech for 130$ or im sure u can find lowering springs for cheaper
yeah, it's not worth it.. the stock shocks are still crap and those springs are still soft so even if you lower it, it won't handle that much better... coilovers are definitely the best option.. it's okay to try different things though.. i'd probably cut my springs if i wanted to see what it was like riding on cut springs... but i don't so i'll just get me either agx or konis.
