Default --CRX B16A Lean/Rich Problem--

Hey Guys,

I have a 1990 Honda CRX Si w/ a B16A swap. I am having an issue while I am at a steady speed. It is running rich and when it does that, it jerks a bit. Then if I give it some more gas it runs fine, then starts again if I keep it at a steady speed. Has anyone experienced this problem? If so what was your fix?

Would a VAFC help with this by any chance?
Would replacing the distributor help?
Would replacing the distributor cap, rotor button, spark plugs, and plug wires help?

Thank you in advance for any responses or opinions. Thanks again.

i have experienced ths problem.. check the 02 sensor wiring make sure that C16 and C8 ecu pins a wired correctly to the O2 sensors ( there should be two o2's)..i did that with mine plus a tune up (plugs/wires/cap/rotor/fuel filter) it runs a little better and the bogging only happens when my gas gets low (got a Walbro) I also would recommend that you check your vacuum lines. Good luck and let me know what you find...

I have experienced this on mine. With the benefit of a wideband, I can see what it's doing. After cruising for an extended period of time at a small throttle angle range, the ecu will begin to lean out the AF mixture. It will start with a little bit, but eventually it gets cocky and starts running at like 17:1, and the motor is bogging and misfiring. As you noted, getting into the throttle a ways makes it go away, but it returns shortly after holding speed.

I have heard reports of the O2 wires being in the wrong position. In my case, I only have one O2 sensor, which feeds both inputs. This probably isn't the best method, but there are limited choices when it some to some things. Anyway, my personal solution was to disable the O2 sensors entirely in the ecu, and run the car solely off the maps. This obviously required a little tuning using the wideband and all that, but a cool 30 minutes of street diving had the whole low cam map tuned, and 5 or 10 minutes solved the high cam map. I had tried fixing the problem with the SFC-VTEC I had before all the ecu tuning stuff, and it didn't have much effect.

I'm sure the root cause of the problem is in the O2 sensor feedback, whether it's the sensors wired backwards or just using one sensor or something. Double check all that stuff, and maybe even replace the O2 sensors, depending on their condition.

I also have this problem. I cant tell the fuel mixture, but sometimes I notice my exhaust smells more rich than it should for sure. There was a thread awhile ago about this where at least 10 or 15 guys had the same problem with their first gen b16's. I have yet to do anything to try to fix my problem. I'll probably just try to replace the o2's and see if that helps at all, along with plugs and wires and whatnot.
