Making a carbon fiber hood skin?
How does this sound?
My hood has some dents and such, i don't know how much that will effect the mould, but i'm wanting to make a hood skin by spreading vaseline over my hood, getting a large sheet of carbon fiber to place over it and laying the resin. Let it dry, use a grinder to grind the edges to shape, then just use that to pin it down, will this be enough to make a sturdy hood?
I've never worked with Carbon Fiber, so does this sound feesable, or am i shooting off in left field?
I plan buying the Carbon Fiber from eBay, but i know nothing about the resins, someone care to post a link for what i need, i've read epoxy, but i'm a little confused on what kind.

i dont know if vasaline would work, i wouldnt bother trying. use mold release. make a fiberglass mold of the hood first, then lay a sheet of carbon fiber in the mold. to make it stronger i would lay a couple layers of fiberglass over that. then seperate the old hood from the skin, and use 3m body adhesive to hold the new skin on. here's 2 links that might help you out.

I don't want to deal with a mould and i don't see it really being a benefit to making a hood when i could just lay it on top and get a close duplicate, i know it won't be as smooth as taking a mould, but whatever, i plan spraying it with flat clear.
Thanks for the information.

Still getting information on it. Probably won't happen until Spring, getting a little too cold to do this now.
Vaseline worked for me to release fiberglass, but i guess i might as well do it right with a release agent.

not worth it, Carbon sheets cost alot and you have to lay it straight to make it look right. try something small first before you spend a load on a fake carbon fiber hood.
Fake carbon fiber hood?
It'd be made of only CF, which would make it a real CF hood insted of most that are fiberglass with CF laid over it...
I don't really care if it looks too bad, i'm just wanting something to cover my engine and lightweight, so long as it looks decent. I plan just laying it over my hood, spreading resin over it with those squeegie things you lay bondo with, release it, lay a thick coat of flat clear, hood pin it in place.
