Default Tach AND Spedo "jump" around

i have a 92 Civic Coupe 2 door with a Ex/si (s20) tranny. and my tach and spedo like "jump around". if i put the gas to the floor (like im racing) the rpms will sometimes go from like 1G to 2G normaly but "stick" at 2500 and then JUMP up to 5000 when the engine actualy reaches 5G RMP. it doesnt have to happen when im racing, it happend almost anytime theres no rhyme or reason to when it does it. and my speedo does the same thing. i cant figure out whats wrong. i took my cluster off and cleaned all the connections and put it back, swapped clusters, and still the same problem. so my guess it (the problem) is some place between the sending units and the cluster. i had gotten a response a while back saying that it might be a loose ground wire... but what one? i checked all the main ones (chassis to head, tranny, starter...ect) and they were all good and making good connection. What sending unit is it that send the signal to the tach, and does it go RIGHT to the tach or tru the ECU first. i also swaped ECUs and problem is still there (i have a few extra parts laying around haha). so the only thing i can figuar out is its a ground wire someplace. or a bad sending unit. any help would be appreciated. Also. i dont think its a ECU related problem because my rev limiter is still kicking in. and if it wasn’t reading the signal right, it would rev past the rev limiter..? right? Thanks again.

ps i know this is just all over the place but bare with me. haha

if it recently started happening, then the problem is the igniter in your distributor. If it always acted like that. then it might be a loose ground and or wire.

So is there a easy way to find out what wire is grounding out? or is it going to be a bitch to find the right one? (for the tach) i think i know the problem with my spedo thing. i think its the VSS. i have another one thank god though. lol I dont think its the ignigtor in the dizzy because i just replaced the dizzy last summer. (summer 04') any ideas?

Also could be a failing alternator. mine cause the speedo and other gauges to die out for a second or 2

you may have a loose battery cable mine does that when the battery cable is loose or the battery is dead

The battery really doesnt run your car.. your alternator powers up you car.

i can barely make a 20 mile trip just on the battery
