it depends on the model civic but they all come with SOHC D-series motors that aren't very good for power unless you boost and even if you boost they can only handle 200whp.

you're best bet would be to swap out the motor for another one of you're choice (B-series is the most popular and for the most part are DOHC VTEC). There are a ton of swaps available depending on you're plans for it and how much power you want to make.

I'm pretty sure the 93 Civic Hatch SI came with a D16 SOHC Vtec pushing 125 horses with 106 torque. The others with varying horsepower/tq D15's.. If you're going to get one, and you just want all motor, go with the 93 Civic Hatch SI.

*Edit*

Meh, Beat me to it.

Best swap would vary based on opinions. I'd say Boosted B16, buttttt, other people may say other things. Research.

waste of money man. B16 has the same torque as the D16Z6, it just revs higher, hence the higher horse power.

CX came with D15B8...8 valve 1.5 liter POS with horrible gearing.
VX came with D15Z1...16 valve SOHC VTEC-E...one intake valve before vtec and 2 after cross over. Not a bad engine besides the tranny(same as CX), and the SUPER restricted intake/exhaust. Not good for much besides mileage
DX had the D15B7. Can swap cams from D16A6(CRX/Civic Si), which can net you some decent gains for cheap. Mista Bone went 15.8 on a D15B7 with only this mod- I believe...someone correct me.

Si had the D16Z6...great engine for starting out. Easy to piece together a cheap turbo kit, best gearing for D series stock, etc. I've had plenty of all motor D16Z6 builds for very cheap and beat my share of B16's at the strip and my share of Z06's on the road course/auto-x course. Research is best
