Default Accord 98 LX dying constantly

I own a 98 accord LX standard transmission, with 145k miles, about three or four months ago it started to die on me (will explain with more detail on 2nd paragraph), even on the road going 40 m/h and on gear, it just dies. Took it to a mechanic, the only thing they do is to connect the computer to it (since the check engine light was one and has been on since I bought it), the messages was related to the EGR valve, they suggested I should have that replaced, which I did, the check engine light stayed off for a few days and it came back on.

Ok, here's the deal with the problem dying: first, it takes two or three tries now to get started, usually dies a second after it seems to be started. once I get going it seems normal, then usually at stoplights or even when going it dies, like dead dead, then again takes two or three tries to get started again.

The mechanic said that if the EGR did not fix it, then it would have to do with the Catalitic converter.......

Any help would be greatly appreciated
