Default Engine Swap

I currently have an 88 SI, running and in good shape. I'm thinking of making into a track car. The CRX handles well, but very underpowered by today's standards. I used to track it and did ok, but the 300+ hp cars these days are hard to keep up with.

I know you guys have done it. Integra 1.8L (GSR/Type R) swap to an 88 CRX SI. I know the motor mounts are different, other than that I don't know what it would take. Is that Cali smog legal, how much of a pain in the butt is it?

Any input?

Someone on here smogged a gsr hatch, other than that you may be SOL if you live in cali.

Mounts, shift linkage, and a hammer are necessary to get it to fit mechanically, and a few little wiring changes have to be made, other than that it looks fairly straightforward.

Considering the amount of cars I held even to back when I had my 70hp d15b8, including my 2001 sunfire which I SPANKED in a race, I would have to say that today's cars are horiffically underpowered. I know you are talking about 300HP cars, but the civic was never meant to compete with that.

The best swap for trying to do that IMO would be ls-vtec, but the chances of getting that to pass emissions depend on how many people you want to blow at the ref stations.

I thought the Integra LS was not VTEC, or did I miss something. What engine type, CC, HP is that? Also if I do that I will definetly drop in an LSD. They make the biggest difference I've ever seen on a race track.

Most of the posts are in the Type R forum. I'm just here because the Type isn't fast enough anymore, and I need professional help.

Yea, when I get money, which is a hard thing to do in college, I'm planning on a whole ls-vtec with b16 LSD tranny, stage 2 clutch, light flywheel, cams, all that good stuff. It's staying NA too because thats just the way I want it.

What Kind of racing? Drag racing or Road racing? If road racing; I'd recommend lightening the chassis(free power), and getting the cars suspension, wheel and tires in order before you start adding power. Even for drag racing this could make a huge difference.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by itr1275 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> Is that Cali smog legal</TD></TR></TABLE>

YES! But like the other Users here say, you have been on the forum long enough to know what is what. I dare say that you even used the search feature before posting this topic.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 31flavorscivic &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Someone on here smogged a gsr hatch, other than that you may be SOL if you live in cali.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Why would he be SOL? He isn't trying to put a CRV(B20) engine in the car, and the engines he is quoting are NEWER than his car. Any engine the same year as the car or newer can be California BAR certified. You will have to have all of the proper emissions equipment, and use a USDM computer.

Why are you recomending that he do and LSVTEC(unless it's going to be a trailer queen) when he is clearly looking to be "legal" in California. A LSVTEC Frankenstein motor is not legal in California

Stick to what you know, and stop providing erroneous information. Better yet go back to http://www.j-body.org

Sorry, sorry, sorry and sorry again. But GOD PLEASE DONT MAKE ME GO BACK THERE!!!!!!!!!!! I hate j-body's with all my heart and soul. My sunfire is such a piece of ****. Doesn't surprise me when I hear of all of GM's mounting problems. I didn't buy it, my parents bought it for WAY too much, and it's only been a bucket full of problems. Don't even get me started.

I guess I overlooked the facts. You are right, the engine has to be the same year or newer as the car, has to match classification (ex. not a b20 from a CRV because it's a light truck engine in a car) and then has to pass emissions. I just thought it was really hard to get a swap to pass BAR in California. I was scared of something I knew nothing about.

Once again, I AM SO SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111one

For a track car just go with a type r in order to fit the gsr you'll be massaging the firewall with a BFH.

The type r will work perfect especially with a 88 CRX Si emptied

Just to clarify.

Smog legal is a must. I currently drive my Toy 4x4 every day and leave the CRX and ITR at home. They both get better milege, but I can't really leave the ITR unattended, and the CRX is not register at the moment. So if I could get a few more ponies in the CRX, still get decent milege, and be smog legal I might be down for a swap. Othewise I will probably smog and drive it as is.

They ITR and GSR motors are the same size, why would I need to adjust the firewall?

Yeah I fell for the "click here" LOL good one

So swapping a GSR/Type R motor 100% smog legal?

Any thoughts on a 2.0/2.2 Prelude motor? I can get more torque!

I know what BFH is

I was huh-ing the part about the firewall. Does the GSR manifold hit the firewall? Not that it really matters b/c you'll want to replace it anyway.

If I don't completely have my head up my *** this time, I believe that the alternator cannot clear the fender or firewall without a little pounding.

When I bought my car I knew it had had an interesting life. It had that spot knocked out, meaning that at one point in time it had a B series.

The GSR intake manifold touches the firewall. You'll have to dent that up to get it to fit. I would recommend putting a skunk2 manifold on it.

Otherwise I know someone locally that has a mildly tuned Type R and is tearing up the tracks (in a crx)

No matter what b-series swap you do you'll have to dent the frame to get the alternator pulley to fit correctly.

I would just go with a b16 out of a del sol convert to obd1 and you should be good to go. unless you go with a gsr out of a 94-95.

I'm not to familiar with Smog legality since I live in Minnesota sorry.

I would assume Track and street legal don't always go hand in hand and thats why I recommend the Type R for track use.

Hope that clarifies.

Well, yes the alt doesn't completely clear the fender frame with the stock alt belt, but it has no issues with the firewall at all.

There is a smaller alt belt that you can run so that you don't have to bang in the fender frame area. I had planned on doing that but had problems finding the right size so i ended up banging it in anyway. You don't really need that much room.

YES! Awesome for CA tuners, this manifold is now CARB exempt , but MSRP is $300

But modifying cars is a hobby, and hobbies aren't free. if the person can't afford the parts they should buy an ant farm. (this isn't directed toward anyone in here)
