Hi everyone.

My name is John Hunt aka Lo Cash John ( http://www.LoCashRacing.Org )and I'm really into the air-cooled VW drag racing scene. Over at one of our main VW foums the topic of VWs on the PINKS TV show came up. I suggested that we (VW racers/street hellions) should put our spare parts, cash and whatever else together and build a car as a group effort to go on the show. IF we win, our car and the car we win gets raffled off and the money goes to charity. Everyone liked the idea, so I email the show's producer and to my surprise he emailed me back within minutes then called me. Turns out, that's the kind of human interst story they're looking for to add some dimension to the show. So once we have a finished car, they're going to match us up for filming.

So, where does the HONDA connection come in? Well, if we're crazy enough to build a car for this show, are you guys? Think about it; VW vs Honda in a street race grudge match on PINKS. You guys build what you can and we build what we can, then we line 'em up. If the VW team wins both cars get raffled/auctioned off and the money goes to the charity we choose. If you guys win, same thing, but you pick the charity. Everybody gets some positive exposure, manufacturers who donate parts get TV exposure, charities get donations and everybody wins.

As it stands, we have most parts needed for a motor and the trans is covered. We are still working on coming up with donations for enough cash for a roll cage and rear brakes.

On your behalf, you will need someone to take charge and gather parts and dollar contributions. This will include contacting suppliers and explaining what's going on and asking them for help. If the Honda world is anything like the VW world, these guys will be your best friends.

As is, DuneBuggies & Hot VW's Magazine is intersted in covering our build up for a future article, so I'm sure if this takes off, HCI or Import Tuner may show similar interest for a Honda effort.

I don't own a Honda, but this sounds like an awesome Idea. You have to know that the honda is going to smot the vw tho.

honda would get shillacked no rules vw air cooled cars are fast , i saw some hick up here with a tube chassis he bought all the parts off the shelf even the chassis,
went 9.10 with just NOS....

honda would get owned on that one

Keep in mind we using lots of (very) used parts. Also, this is not heads up, so negotiating for lengths etc is all part of the deal. I do want to see the VW win (duh) but the bottom line is it's a one way trip for our car win or lose. Winning only gets you bragging rights and the final decision on what charity (charities) benfits from this. If we win we want the money to got to Hurricane Katrina relief.


You guys need to get the word out fast. Someone has to step up and play the part of "Project Manager" for this to work.

 

......its def. a good idea. That show needs to see some import action.
...but the host on the show is a tool, he knows not one thing about racing.
-it doesn't matter whos car is faster(even tho a built b-series with no restriction on turbo size would walk all over a Vdub)its all about who is better at negotiation, and sandbaging.
--so lets get something popin here guys!

 

Rich, the shows host is also the shows creator and while he may not be a nuts and bolts guy when it comes to drag racing, he gets props from me for bringing forth an original show idea. At least it's not another loose weight/survive on a desert island/try to win this job bullshit like so much of TV anymore. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

so this would be an aircooled bug? honestly i do believe a fwd honda would get worked.. depending on whats in the bug.. some of those turbo bugs are nuts!!

The Real Story on PINKS

So last year I called the producer/host of the show pinks. said I wanted to be on the show and race for titles. He tells me im going to be racing some civic from california. so I get an 89 formula roller and start putting a budget car togeather for this show with every intention of racing it for titles. about 2 months later i get a call saying the guy from california backed out. So im like wtf??? The producer/host is like do you know anyone from your area that you could race against?. im like i think i got your guy. so i call jucin up cause he likes to be on tv, and basically said do you want to be on this show pinks? we set it up so that we had no risk of losing our cars.

Now since we had no risk of losing the cars we decided to sell the formula and use my wifes car. put in a new cam, heads, and fogger kit to be a comparable race for jucin. The night before we had to leave the oil pan cracked and we had no replacement at the time. We scrambled and called up tom "bird of prey" and I said "can we borrow your car for the weekend" With us being in a bind he kindly said sure. We straped a nitrous kit on an otherwise stock car and headed for iowa.

We get there early "like the producer/host told us to. and find out we had to wait til it was dark to shoot the episode, so that sucked. It was like 15 degrees outside and was freezing my *** off.

When we finally started going I myself got so agrivated with how everything was going I was going to put the car on the trailer and leave. I got threatend by the producer/host that I couldnt leave and had to do the show otherwise he would take my car. "even though it wasnt even mine and had no title for it." So we ended up doing the race the Producer/hosts wanted it to be. I did what they told me to. I really didnt care if i won or lost considering we wernt going to lose anything and just acted for the camera.

In closing. NO I did not lose a car nor had any risk of losing the car. and actulally started driving it home right after the camera's were shut off. and jucin blew his car up. And thats the truth.

I got an invite to the premier of the show in california with no plane ticket attached. declined the offer and sent this email to the producer.

"Thanks for the invite but i will have to decline the offer. In all honesty If i would have known how it was gonna turn out i would have never have done it. I slaved to get a car done in time for your guys show. it didnt happen so we used a back up car. paid god knows how much in gas to get out into the middle of bum **** in the freezing cold winter to basically put on a show for you guys. ends up u guys dont know the first thing about racing and i get argivated and was just like eh whatever il put on a show and lose. and now i look like some stroke that lost his car on tv without even getting my shop plugged.

Then The Producer/host calls up saying hey we need you to do another show. so im like I cant afford it right now im not made of money. than im like well **** it I will try and put somthing togeather. I spend a bunch of money on another car and end up not being able to finish it cause like i said i really couldnt afford it. so now im broke and trying to get myself back on my feet. I would just assume not be associated with this show any more. its been far more trouble than it was worth.

What did i get out of it? I look like a loser on tv, and im in debt. what did you guys get? a big fat paycheck. have a nice day."

After the show aired I made a few post explaining my situation. I got a call from the producer and host saying the fox network was very upset about what I was saying on the internet and i had better take it down. So i took it down and now i realized I never got a copy of the supposed contract i signed so i can say what I want. All Im doing is telling the TRUTH about the show.

I Hope the show does well. it is a great idea. best of luck to them with future shows

And i did get a check for $300 for gas after i begged for it.

I have no illusions about the shows knowledge or lack of when it comes to drag racing. We race cars and they make TV shows. Period. What you have just said is why our community is doing this as a group effort. No one person should have to layout the kind of cash and time just to risk loosing the whole car.
As for the contracts and such, I was told that we will need to sign over a title or bill of sale when we arrive for filming. Same thing for the competition. Whoever wins at the end of it all gets both titles.

 

i have no opinions on the show i have never seen it, just people talking about it.
i came across that post awhile ago just thought i would share, so that way you can see how it is from someone who has done it.

Street racing is illegal why not take it to a track then you can race more than once.....

When I was building a GTI for drag racing, I checked out several rule books and found a trend that almost every rule ended with ......except air-cooled vw. I realized that air-cooled vw's have been racing since the 50's and have been developed to the point where you can shake a vw catalog and get just about everything you need to build a really fast car for very little cash!

I'm a die-hard vw fan; however, I get just as excited about a fast rotary, all wheel drive dsm, or screaming honda. I'd love to see the 'dub/honda race and those of us who know what each car can do will have lots of fun evaluating what was done and not done. I'll support both teams just to get a non-B.S. race out of it.

I hope it happens and I hope it is done well, but I secretly lean towards the 'dub! Hey 99Hybrid_Hatch, while you're waxing your ***, the vw will be driving away! (I had to get my jibe in).

How about this -

How about all the different web sites get together with some sponsors and we'll put all the cars on Pinks! for a special charity relief race.

We'll laydown some ground rules between us and the producers to make the racing really close.

Too keep cost down, how about nothing faster than 11.49 because the cost of a rollcage could be spent on other parts of the car

I think this would be fun, I'd love to do Pinks!

 

I have a LS block and cranck I can donate. I also think it should be a all motor car cause those bugs Hook!!!!!!!!

 

I have some slicks I could donate...or maybe I could part with my Purple TiAL bov. 25x9x13's M&H's

 

I don't think the parts would be hard to come by from any of the different communities, but the labor involved would be alot.
Because it would take alot of time, parts, effort on the part of each "community", maybe more would get involved if it wasn't just drag racing. Possibly like one of those "street car shootouts" that the magazines always do, with drag, road racing, appearance (the show crowd couldn't be left out). All the cars are built and funded by thier respective communities, and then you have the charity thing of course.
Because of all the negative things I've heard about "pinks", maybe the whole thing could be just a challenge that one of the magazines picked up. It would be a shame to have all the communities come together for something as cool and charitable as this for a swanky show like pinks.

It's a good idea, but I think in order to make it as big as it could be, it would need to also be bigger than pinks. Just my opinion.

i feel the same way as 99hybrid i just bought a 72 super beetle but im all for the honda.

my friends and i came to the conclusion in highschool that any part you need for a VW is 59.99, or was it 49.95.. i forgot. one or the other.. both very cheap!
