Does this port job get the thumbs up?

pass.

looks like someone's project or it was originally a DIY then became an "oh-my-god-i'm-in-way-over-my-head" deal.

the part that worries me is the area gouged unevenly around the seats. for $700, it's not a bad deal though. I would still dissassemble and reassemble everything but the guides.

ok, here is a picture of the head off my miata i had p&p'd, just for comparison:

take note of the symmetry and transition of the surfaces.

now look at this:

the symmety is irregular and rough.

a little more specifically:

the finishing is really crappy, the more i look at it. the split looks unfinished and rough. to me, it looks like someone tried doing it for the first time, then took it in to have it "fixed". what also comes to mind is how close he/she may have gotten to the water passages. if it was my choice, i would consider taking that head to a professional to have the porting work cleaned up a LOT better.

the more i look at it, the more flaws i see. look past the lighting, because the graining from the tool give a false effect. it's just not a good job at all. i think that to clean that up, the guides might have to be removed.

From what Ive always seen from other companies, the intake side is supposed to be left kinda rough so that it will cause turbulence in the runner and keep the fuel from sticking to the wall. I do see the symetry but that also goes back to the smoothness.

from all the threads i've read and the magazines too i thought that p&p on a K20 head wasn't worth it like you wont make anymore power out of it

Its not that you wont make anymore power, they say its really not worth the gains due to the fact that the K series head flows very well. But the more you make the more air involved so im sure porting comes in handy once the power is made.

Also all those things you circled are just the stock casting from the factory. The head doesnt look to be ported at all , just looks like they started to sand it with some low grit and stopped. Definatly fixable and usable.

exactly. but if you look at it, there are also some VERY unever die grinder scores in there. the stock casting would not be that irregular, even if it was sand cast.

seems like if someone went through the trouble to have the guides removed and replaced, you could have had an excellent opportunity for a substantial port.
