just took head off - please read - need to clarify
engine is a d16a6
just took my heade off b/c the lady i bought the car off of said that it needed a head gasket. well, the hg is like new(didnt even stick to the head or block?!?!), with one exception. one of the rear head bolt holes(the one nearest the timing belt) was kinda pinched on the edge of the hole, the water jecket area directly underneath that bolt hole had white residue(dust kinda) which means it was losing/burning coolant right? which is why the car would over heat after driving it for a few.
i am taking the head to my local machine shop in the morning so he can check the head and resurface it if necessary. four of my valves were sticking out a bit after the head came off, should i be concerned? any positive feedback would be great.
ps i can taker pics if anyone would like to help me that much i just cant host the pics. thanks

how does the car run? taking it to a machine shop to see if its straight is definately a good idea. what do you mean the hole was pinched? like it wasnt round anymore? if the machine shop says the head is warped consider taking your block in too.
like part of the edge of the hole isn't flat, like slightly dented enough to cause some sort of leak by not letting the hg seal properly. the car ran fine sitting at idle several times, i never actually drove besides out of the lady's driveway into the street to the tow truck. started and ran fine, she never overheated onme in my driveway. i let her run 5 times on different days, twice over an hour, no overheating.
the lady i bought it from said that the car acually shut down on her and was blowing white smoke, we'll see tomorrow.
anyone else?

For it to blow white smoke, the water jacket would have to be leaking into the cylinders, meaning a bad headgasket. Definetly have the head checked. Rotate the cam and see if the valves seat properly, if not, you will have some problems.
you can also get water into the cylinders (or just cyl#4) by having a bad intake manifold gasket so if everything checks out on the head that could be a second place to look.
As far as valves being open there will always be a few valves open as long as there's a cam in the head because the cam will always be in a position where it holds at least a couple open.

You could pour water in the intake and exhaust ports with the valves closed.....if they don't leak, you are golden.
