WHAT HEAD IS BETTER FOR LS/VTEC
Trending Topics
the B18C(1) GSR head will give the most compression and hence more gains..
B16A head would be best due to the cost
B18C(5) typeR head just plain costs too much...same dimensions as B16A head so just get that and get it ported and change the valvetrain
B17A, good luck finding one...pretty much same as B16A

from what i heard the b16a heads are better than b18c1 for flow reasons or some sh*t like that. thats what i heard and remember, correct me if im wrong.

stock for stock a GSR head flows better and makes higher compression then a B16A head. people tend to go with the B16A head becasue it's cheaper/easier to find, considering the B16A was around for over a decade...besides, who in thier right mind would sell you a GSR head off of a perfectly good GSR engine
ok i got a question about it now too.
how easy is it? does the head bolt right on? I got a 96 civ EX and im planning on getting a b18b w/turbo. should i just say screw LS/VTEC and just turbo the b18b? does vtec even matter at that point? Thanks fellas!

do not attempt to build an ls/vtec or cr/vtec if you are not willing to dish out some major cash for a complete build up...I won't go into details but I'm building a cr/vtec right now and it is hard on the wallet!
the way I see it, you either go turbo OR frankenstien....both is kinda pushing it(unless you have cash comming out your a$$)...
you can make very impressive hp and tq#s with a boosted B18B...eventually, that will need to built up too though
I say go N/A...but that's me

my 2 cents.
yup. i've been fasting for a month now. hehehe! and as far as what head is better for ls/vtec's, i'd go for gsr heads. they give u a little more compression. but if u can get a better deal with a b16 or itr or gsr then go for it.
Just trying to form some research!
B20/VTEC: so whats the diff. between gsr heads and itr heads! I was thinking of getting the itr head to put on the b20 block instead of the gsr's? Shouldnt itr heads to better than GSR heads....on the b20 block?

again, if ur going to build the monster right u should contact ur dealer first regarding piston spec so they can give u the right compression ratio when combo'd with the head of ur choice and the block that the piston is going into.
if ur just going to leave everything stock, then try to get the gsr head and some thinner head gasket to scavenge all the compression needed to compensate for the head swap (note: ls and/or b20 pistons have shallow valve reliefs so make sure that u clay check for valve-to-piston clearances before getting really thin head gaskets. milling the head is also a no-no if u want to gain more compression. milling should only be done just the get the head level and straight).
pick ur poison. and that, as they say, is that.
The combination of a b18/b20 block and a b18c1 head is going to give you 3/4-1 point higher compression right off the bat compared to a b16 head. This is something to consider if you plan on running a piston like a pr3 or a jdm type r (don't even think about using the ctr piston unless this is a race motor). Sure, everybody looks for that higher compression, but you have to consider how far you want to take it. I say go for the b16/c5 head. You can have more control over your compression ratio, instead of having a daily driven 12.5:1 monster. Besides, the gsr's are more expensive and harder to come by than a b16, so you can use the money you saved on headwork.
ls/vtec B16a is actually a better choice, first of all. You can find it cheap and their abundant, secondly GSR heads are little more expensive...the difference is small...jeff from importreview.com has a dyno chart...so you can go their site and take a look...
get the SI head, with ITR cams. I think inlinepro sells a b16a complete already drilled, tapped and all oil lines for like 850. its kinda high, but if you want something already all set up for you there are places that sell them.

The combustion chamber sizes are not that different 41.6(gsr) vs 42.7(b16), I believe.
