Best Radar Detector for the Cash?
Looking for a good Radar Detector, and asking H-T what the best ones for the money is.
Note: It would be helpful to show me a link of where to purchase them.
Thanks,
Meatball

Heh, I have an expert opinion I would like to share with you...
1. I am a for real police officer. So I know how radar works and actually use on every day.
Doppler radar tracks the Biggest, The Fastest, and then the closest moving object, in that order. So, a detector will only save you if the police officer is not paying attention and doesnt notice that you are the one moving faster than anyone else.
For laser radars, by the time you hear the "Blip" on your detector, he has already tracked and recorded your speed; so you are screwed there as well.
Your best bet is to be A.) observant. Watch out for the police, and watch out for other traffic slowing down for no apparent reason ahead of you. B.) Save your money and buy something nice for your car.
A lot of people swear by detectors, but honestly, if I had a dollar for every guy I stopped for speeding that had a detector, I could build a MAD 500HP all motor!
If you are planning on traveling, a CB radio is the best detector you can buy. The truckers report the location of every police officer on the interstate and you are kept informed in real time of their exact position. (They **** us cops off!)
Again, detectors are really a gimmick. If you are close enough to get a detector "Blip" then the cop already knows your speed. The only time they save your *** is if you are mashed into a pack of traffic, and you probably arent going fast enough for the guy to care anyways...
But it's your cash, spend it as you wish...
BTW, I am one of those cool cops that never gives tickets. I always hated getting them, so I know how the guy on the other end feels...

There is a video on clubwrx.net of some radar detectors, and paints. (Which ones to use etc)
But it's hard for me to understand.
Anyway, they try it with a few different cars, and with a combo, they got the radar detector to read distance, but not speed. (I'm pretty sure that's it)
I'll try to post a link for the video, if I can still find it.
Edit:
Here's the Topic with the video's:

Same here (80-85), and this is Wisconsin on top of it - slow, retarded drivers and cops with nothing better to do (honest!). Haven't run a detector since I was 16 (never rewired next car for it), and so far I've got only 1 speeding ticket, which couldn't be avoided. The rest of my family swears by them, although they rarely get pulled over.
As for the not being able to avoid the beams... Even the laser units can be sensed before your speed is recorded, assuming it wasn't pointed at you first. I believe it was at 1 mile, the laser beam used in those units spreads to 30-35 feet. It can also be reflected and sensed farther away than the target between you and the cop due to the light's intensity (although it less-reflective/penetrating infrared IIRC). The deal with detectors is to sense when radar/laser is being used, then hitting the brakes before the cop refocuses it on you.
The best thing to do is never drive >5 over the posted limit on anything besides crowded highways/freeways/mainstreets/florida turnpikes. I also keep a close eye on what I call 'controlable' areas (roads where cops can hide), and not speed at night. In Wisconsin everyone knows at least 5 people who've hit a deer at night, so you should know better. You lose the more time parking/walking slow than you do driving a tad faster.

for me the best radar detector is just not driving excessively fast and watching the road ahead of you. i drive pretty fast (usually around 90 in the 65) but as long as your not in and out of traffic switching lanes often and changing speeds often u wont usually get bothered. if u really want to buy a device to help you i would purchase a radar jammer. they are usually a lil more pricey but if u r in traffic then it will make u invisible or undetectable until u r way closer.
like i said earlier though the key is just paying attention. cops dont hide in trees and the radar doesnt travel through objects. so they can only se you if u can see them.
also dont hit the brakes if you see the cops then they know u r speeding. a little trick i learned from the rally guys is push in the button on the e brake and lightly pull up. your tail lights dont turn on and since it is just your rear brakes engaging your front end wont dive.

I have yet to get a ticket after my V1 purchase. You have to understand that if you're the only one on the road, you probably shouldn't be flying around. If you have a car in front that you can chase + a radar detector, then you are betting on the fact that the officer will radar/laser that guy first, giving you time to hit the brakes or let off the gas depending on how much over the speed limit you are.
