good solder iron or solder gun
Here is the best soldering gun ever made:
http://bmwdean.home.att.net/soldergun.htm
But it hasn't been made in years. I have a new one stashed away, and the one I use is epoxied together after I drove over it with my 1965 VW while a kid.
You have to buy them on ebay though now.... BTW I agree 100% with the guys assessment on the page above. Nothing made today compares with an instant hot Wen.
This is a great company for soldering supplies http://www.wassco.com/
I use a Metcal SP200 for board work. http://www.wassco.com/sp200soldering.html
and a Metcal SP440 for desoldering http://www.wassco.com/spseldesstat.html

holy ****.... $265... that's a little out of my budget but thanks for the info.
what determines a good gun/iron? i have a craftsman gun but it doesn't have the two prong like things like the one u link'd, it just has a fat tip on it. and pretty much sucks *** on everything i try to solder.

I personally don't like the "gun" style soldering irons. They are a bit too bulky when working in tight places.
I have a Weller WLC100 and it is a great adjustable temp iron that can be had for around $40.00
It gets very hot and should be able to do thick wires no problem. Most of the time I have it set on "3" (the middle) because if I crank it up,the soldier will stay liquified for too long and drip off the joints.
