I added all my travel receipts for this year.
I am missing a lot of reciepts but I tried to keep all of them. I attended 9 NDRA races. All these receipts are of gas, hotel, race gas, food, plane tickets, rental cars, tires, tranny gears, water etc and misc. stuff along the way. These do not include intrance fees to any of the events. I expected to be a lot more but then again I am missing a lot of reciepts. The total I came up with was $12,228.43 out of all the receipts I had.
I am broke..lol

One thing I forgot to add is that when I made the budget for gas I only figured going over there, but I didnt figure coming back.
So my gas ended up being double of what I had originally bugeted for.

if you dont have steak diners every night and sleep in the truck while traveling youll spend at least 20g's to travel a whole season. thats what we spent in 2003 towing to 18 events. not including local test-n-tune. and you figure fuel was only $1.50-1.75 back then.

that's what i thought, until i went with AAP MOTORSPORTS last event there truck gets the same MPG as my truck at the same speed, plus you spend half the price on food since you cook it all there, and you don't pay for hotel, and you can split it in 2-3 ways since you can bring 3 cars. only thing that gets you iS the $1500 each month for the totter-home/trl.
i know just gas i'm around 8-10k for sure.

I remember when Scott Mohler shared his expenses with us on .(Neons)org and he said that barely broke even.
That was the year he won the NIRA Comp 4 title, but got d*cked out of some money by IDRC I guess has been resolved since.
If I remember he won more than half the events he entered and he traveled with Darrell ***'s crew back when he had the green Neon coupe.
I'm a professional driver and I used to drive for Schneider and JB Hunt. Diesel prices are a killer right now, but its possible to break even or turn a small profit racing.
Average fuel use by a 2005 Freightliner Century Mid Roof with a empty trailer (about 13,500lbs) does get about the same mileage as what most "Hot Shot" haulers use which is Dodge, Chevy and Ford 3/4 ton dually diesel pickups.
Comes out to about 10-13mpg
Figure a double axle inclosed trailer with air compressor, tools, spare parts and one car is around 7-8K and most of these trucks are rated at 10,000lbs total towing weight, it might be worth the extra money to get a Renadge hauler with "apartment" on the back for living quarters.
Hotel cost add up.... If you don't wanna stay in dives..
I feel you can tour a season and be sucessful and profitable. If done right...

You can make money racing, but you can't count on it. 95% of the people doing it aren't making a profit from winnings, i promise you that. If you don't have a major sponsor and you campaign a car for a season, it's going to cost you money, period. A successful car and team may be able to come close to breaking even, if you're lucky, but it doesn't happen much. Racing is expensive, I hope that everyone trying to do it understands the reality of it. I'd love to have a race car, but I can't afford one. I don't want to be "that guy" who's always bitching about the people with more money. lol
I'd love to see one of the PRO RWD teams post this up, its amazing how much is spent v. how much is actually won. It becomes 100% about getting sponsors for everything to even attempt to break even.
If you got into racing to make money, you need to have your head checked. You would almost have to win every event and not have your car brake to make out. Racing is to have fun and the cost is the 10k+ a year to do it. Think about how much we put into ours car just to go to the event, think you'll ever win that back? Add that and the cost to get to the event and you just dug a big hole. It's fun thats all that matters.
I really would like to travel to a couple of nhra events acroos the country.. The thing you have to remeber is that its just to have fun ..
I have spent over 5000 on video games and dvd movies .. the experiance would be totally different , so if you compare it to other things you spend money on then it may not be that bad ....
I have respect for those who travel to events
