Considering buying an S2000 please fill me in on the Good, bad, and ugly of these cars!!!
Hi All,
Just wondering if I could get some good info on how the car is in general and if there are any recalls, recurrent problems shared between certain years or if any particular year was more problematic than other years etc. I currently own a broke down 93 Honda Del Sol that I am in the process of troubleshooting and a 99 Mazda Miata and I recently found out that the 99/00 Miatas were basically lemons because of an engine problem and the Precat on the California cars. So I really need to do my homework before I buy another car to basically replace both these two cars in the next few months. I have done some research but one thing that I am wondering about is if the S2000 requires the 92 octane gas? It would make sense if it does being a 11 to 1 compression engine. But if it doesn't need the high grade fuel, that would be great since the lower grades of fuel are cheaper.
I am mostly interested in buying a 2001 model unless I can find one heck of a good deal on a 02 model with low miles. I think that any of the newer ones are out of my price range for sure. Another question I have is if a body colored hard top came standard with the cars or was that a dealer option? Either way, does the soft top come up easily and does the hard top go on and off easily and what is the approximate weight of the hard top. How is the luggage space, bigger or smaller than the miata trunk? I do not know the exact size of the Miata trunk, but it is pretty small. The Del Sol trunk is humungous compared to the Miata trunk.
I guess that is about all for now, any relevant comments or opinions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex R.

Test drive one??? What are you crazy? I want one delivered to me to put up on cinder blocks in my barn! Seriously, I plan to test drive one soon but I am temporarly in Spokane, WA where the dealers do not have convertable cars on their lots. Guess they don't sell well here. Heading back to Cali soon and will check one out there. I think I might have a problem with the leg room though. I think I will be skinny enough to fit the seat but the leg room might be an issue for me on a long drive. I am 5ft 10 with 32 inch inseam but certainly will not know till I test drive one!

did honda decide to make a car for midgets? jesus christ, you're 5'10. you are not a giant. i'd understand if u were 6'2 and asking this question, but nobody at 5'10 should have a problem. people at your height fit fine in a miata.

I'm 6'1" wiith 34 inch inseam legs
I would hhave like a tilt steering wheel on the S2000 but it was OK. And when you have the roof up, I can't see street lights.
If the seats were maybe an inch lower it would help a lot.

I test drove it and I'm 5'10' and had no problems whatsoever. You'll be fine.

Pro's? Awesome handling sports car that rev's like crazy, sounds freakin' fantastic, looks great, gives you a few luxury comforts (like a/c, power windows, power mirrors, etc)...has a well laid out interior (except for the door controls IMO), and while retaining effective sports car tuning and character, still remains reliable as any Honda (unless you abuse it, which is true with any car)...gas mileage is quite impressive for a car that can run 13's bone stock and shred a road course up like no one's business...we averaged over 20mpg every tank when we had ours, and this car also has one of the best transmissions ive ever felt...ever.
Con's? Small interior, lack luster radio, loud obnoxious ride with top up (and down, but thats with any convertable), slowly becoming more and more common amongst ricer teens (since the 2000/2001's are coming down so much in price), kinda quirky in the rain (but not so much for people used to rear wheel drive cars)...and one of the biggest cons in my opinion...daily driving (in my opinion) is/was a chore in this car.
...specifically to the 2001's (and 2000's) a con to add would be the plastic rear window, which some dont mind, but i personally think looks 100x better with glass. Also, most of the bugs in the S2000 were found in the 2000's and 2001's, specifically dealing with clutch and synchro instances...which are both warrantied repairs from what ive read.
I personally would never buy one for myself...im 6'4 and about 240lbs. I just didnt fit in taht car well, thing is, 85% of the sports cars out there are in the same boat...and just dont have good interior space. I felt it was a great toy car to own, and i will own oen again for leisure purposes with my wife, but only when i can afford to own it for weekend driving only.

I just purchased a 2002 s2k and I love it. I have been tunning hondas for about 4 yrs now and this car is everything you want in a honda stock. I am 5'11" and fit well in the car. It corners like a dream and is really fun to drive. I have owned 3 civic's 2 accord's currently have a turboed integra and this car has got them all beat. My 2 cents...matt
If you could test drive the car for about an hour, It takes some getting used to, to really appreceiate.
I'm in washington and it's been raining for the past 3 days. Couldn't smoke. My whole left leg was drenched. I would say that's my only con so far. Only had mine for 3 days though hehe.

I guess from the first day they were produced...you'd have to look that up. And if you doubt it, go over the S2ki and look at the variety of videos showing stock S2000's running 13's, especially AP2s.
