Default Car will not stay warm

i have a 97 civic w/a 2000 b16, first of all my car when i warm it up it takes for ever to move from C, so i start drivin, and if i turn on the heat my car temp goes rite back down from half way between C and H to C, if i turn it off it goes rite back up. can this all be caused by the thermostat?

A faulty thermostat could cause that.

Tell me, if your car is ideling/not moving/not in the wind, does it warm up? when you go on the highway, does it go right back to cold?

i have the same problem....when i drive, it goes down halfway. Same engine. I just got home, and the top hose was hot and the bottom hot, but not as hot as the top one. The heat coming out of the vents stayed consistantly hot. I need help with this...cold engine means sludge buildup and canadian winters are cold and it takes forever for my car to warm up...even driving on hte highway it takes a while. Thanks for the help

If it eventually heats up when standing still but then cools off when driving/in motion it usually means your thermostat is stuck open. The Heater is just another way to cool off the engine, it is really just a secondary radiator (that's why if your engine starts to over heat you crank the heat on)

I think Helms has a good diagonsis matrix in it.

if you have a hot hose on top, but a cold hose on the bottom, that can be a water pump needing attention if you have already tested the thermostat. to test a thermostat, pull it out and boil some water with the thermostat inside it. at the temperature it is designed to open at, you will see the center portion open. place a high temperature thermometer in the water to see when it opens. you can also let the water cool and see when it closes. most honda thermostats are going to open around 170-180 deg F.

additional note to this gentleman's comments. If you pull your 'stat replace even if it works in the pot of water. It's a cheap part, replace it no mater what if you pull it.

Putting it in the water might give you indication if that was the problem.

yeah, might as well. the thermostat and gasket wont put you out more than a tank of gas even for OE!

my car warms up every morning, yes, but once i start driving with the heat on it goes back down to cold, or even if i allow the engine heat to be on it goes down...i never really tested to see how the hoses are, the water pump might cause this as well?

It does sound like your stat, but what are you running for coolant. If you run a larger mix of water to glycol, then heat will dissipate faster. when you do your stat, change your coolant with premix.
