any bad sides of naval jelly
I have some surface rust on the wheels wells and a couple spots on the sunroof of my crx. I'm thinking of using naval jelly to remove the rust. Is there any bad things that the naval jelly could do to my paint? i don't want to repaint my car. I saw a thread when I searched about the naval jelly spreading and affecting the good paint.
Also does anyone have any tips for using naval jelly.
Thanks for any help.

I've never heard of this stuff but just by the description there, I'd assume you need to use a wire brush to make sure it's effective. I would ask a body shop...

It works great.
Use it where you dont mind the paint peeling and you are fine. Ive used about half a bottle so far, it doesnt take much. Just get an empty plastic container and a bristle brush and paint it on to the affected areas. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes depending on rust, then wipe it off with a cloth. I like to go over the area with a wire wheel to make sure the rust is gone, then clean it with brake cleaner. After that, spray it down with a primer so it doesnt rust back up again.
It says to use water to clean it off with, but that sort of defeats the purpose imo. Naval Jelly works good for me

i have 3 spots on my sunroof. so if i would use naval jelly would u not reccomend it on the sunroof. are there any other good ways to get ride of rust for good?
Id take the roof off and remove the seal around it personally. Then proceed to get it repainted or something afterward. Its good stuff, but its powerful and strips paint so it would be a good precaution.
it sounds like this stuff is really strong. do u think if i would sand the rust around the wheel and then maybe brush some kind of rust stopper where i sanded that that would work? That way i don't have to worry about my paint being stripped.

Possibly. I just like to know that the rust is gone and that is what NJ does. Either way, you will need to repaint where the rust was dont you?

I just used some on a VW bug I'm restoring, works great but yes, it does effect the paint that it gets on. Didin't peel it in my case, just mis-colored it.
Keebler mentioned he used brake cleaner to prep the surface, that will definately cause the paint to peel.

I didnt prep with brake cleaner, I used it to remove the naval jelly. Trust me, you have already done the damage by having to use naval jelly, the momentary shot of brake cleaner is the least of your worries

do any of you guys know of a solvent that i could if i would sand down the rust to bare metal, and then use a solvent that would not affect the paint but would stop the rust from spreading?
