Speedo Cable Problem
Ok, so I've had this issue with a noise coming from the cluster area and finally tried to pin it down tonight. At first the noise was concentrated around 50-60 mph, which wasn't too bad, but over the course of the last couple of months it's gotten worse and spread to a wider range of speeds. Then, after I got my new rims & tires (I don't think there's a connection, but I can't be sure) I noticed that my speedo is now bouncing a bit between 40-60 mph. Well, after checking to make sure I didn't have any screws loose in the cluster area, I happened to disconnect the speedo cable. While this didn't make the noise disappear completely, it did lessen it to some extent so I decided to pull the cable from the tranny and do a quick test drive. Sure enough, on a quick two mile drive it seems that the noise is almost completely gone.
So, the questions are, what the hell could be the issue with the cable to cause this kind of problem? Would be worthwhile to try and squeeze some 3 in 1 oil down the cable or should I just replace it?
Thanks,
Eric

yeah my **** does the same thing its just old it squeaks bounces the whole deal I would just replace it dont disconnect it because its gonna pop a trouble code light on vss sensor.
Just run some oil (better to use grease though) down the cable and that should get rid of the problem. If it doesn't that means it's gone on too long and worn out the cable or lining and needs to be replaced.
Been here done that....
Pull it out of its housing on the tranny side...
soak it in brake cleaner or parts cleaner for an hour....
use a plastic wire brush to clean it off afterwards....
grease it up really well put it back in and it should stop...
