Yep, it could very well be the synchros, I've known guys who spend a day at the track and they come home needing a new set, they are like f*ckin' butter......my gsr with 111K is a little harsh when she's cold but no grinds yet during "spirited" driving, of course every driver is different.......try checking the tranny fluid, maybe it's low, change it with honda mtf or redline.....if it doesn't make a difference, then there could be a small chance in hell it has to do with your clutch engagement but I doubt it.....it's usually the synchros...

my 94 gsr grinds going into 5th when im "spiritied" driving, and it grinds kinda when i put it in reverse some times, and it only grinds when i put it in 5th when im at real high rpms, so i just take it out of gear and let it slow down a little, then put it in 5th....

I had heard though that the synchros usually are more likely to grind during downshifts, and my car's second gear grinds both on "spirited" upshifts and frequently on downshifts. His car only grinds on upshifts. Besides, if he doesn't race the car he would have to be doing something REALLY wrong to kill his synchros in 15,000. Mine just broke 148,000 and it just recently started doing this ****, and only since I ground the hell out of 2nd at 7,000 RPM.

I say take your car to the Acura dealership and have them look at it, and if you have any friends who are mechanics have them take it out for a spin too.

I have a 2001 GS-R also. I haven't had any problems (Knock on wood) As for shifting into reverse....I always shift to 2nd and then over to Rev. I say take it to your Acura dealer and get it checked....

I have a 94 GS-R with 103,000 miles on it and it only grinds going into 3rd at high rpm. I know it's my syncros going out. I have an ACT clutch system, but it still grinds. Oh and I have never grinded going into reverse. I always give my car a little gas so it engages good, if not it probably would grind. maybe you guys should try that.

It should grind shifting into reverse b/c A) there is no synchro and B) reverse gear is straight cut, not helical cut.

As for 3rd gear grind, sounds like a synchro to me.

yeah if you throw it in another gear (i use 3rd) before you put it in reverse i will help the grinding it slows the input shaft in your tranny or some **** like that.

When Acura used to send out magazines to owners, they recommended a stationary double clutch to get it in smoothly as one of their "tips of the month."

I had the same problem. My car is a 2001 GSR and it only had 9400 miles on it (only have 9700 on it now). It grinded into third above 5000 rpm. I took it to the dealer and the took care of it. When they had my tranny apart they said there was no sign of abuse, it was just a defect from the factory. The mechanic said that it looked like the syncro had a clearance problem. Just take it to the dealer they should be able to help you out.

Double clutching is engaging the clutch, shifting to neutral, release clutch, engage clutch, shift into gear, release clutch.

Normally, this is done like a heel-toe downshift, only it saves your synchros a lot of work and damage.

Acura just recommended that you do it stopped, no reving, to get things settled inside the tranny so reverse engagement became smoother.

I just rebuilt my transmission last summer
at the time it had 160000 miles on it
the 2nd gear synchro was shot, 5th was partially gone
all the rest were on their way

I couldn't handle the grinding noise so that's why i ripped the whole thing apart
i bought a transmission from a 96 gsr that only had 25000 miles on
the housing was cracked so i just used the internals

it wasn't too bad of a job, especially if you like to get your hands dirty
but now the tranny shifts perfectly

the whole job only cost 300 when transmission places were estimating 2000

i win

They just replaced the third gear syncro. If that hadn't been covered under warranty it would have cost $670.

its just about impossible for me to shift 1-2 at or near redline quickly anymore in my LS ( 94 with 128K). Everytime i try it grinds away. No problem in any other gear at any other RPM level, just going into 2nd.

Whats the average cost of a syncro???
