DOHC ZC Swap
This question can probably be answered by anyone who has ever done an integra ls swap into a vtec civic. I've got a 94 Civic EX and I don't have the money for a b-series swap and I have heard that a DOHC ZC will bolt right in to my car using the existing motor mounts tranny ecu and whatnot. But, I am questioning the integrity of the ones who informed me of this. The DOHC ZC doesn't have an available vtec option to my knowledge. Would I not need to swap out the ecu for a non-vtec ecu? If so, would I be able to use a 92-95 Civic or 90-93 Integra non-vtec ecu? Is there any wiring that is going to have to be done or will the ecu that I have to use going to plug right in? Don't flame me for asking these questions, because I did search and "ZC" is too short to be recognized and "DOHC D-series" does not bring back any matches in recent or archived posts.

hes talking about a ZC motor. basically like a d-series overhead 1.6. i havnt heard about VTEC on those but its not worth it. ZC feeds about 130 n d16z6 feeds about 125 with better gas mileage. dont think ZC block can fit a b16 or gsr head. correct me if im wrong.
should bolt in fine, as far as wiring, check with, http://www.thezcr.com . those guys know a lot, plus yes the zc did have a vtec, , it was a sohc one though, i would think ur current ecu would be fine, but i think you can easily find a replacement for a dohc one. and no, dohc and sohc blocks are not interchangeable, anyway you look at it, best place to get this motor is hmotorsonline.com , and make sure you get the grey plug dizzy obd1 zc motor, good luck

It's worth it to me. Im not looking to make monster power. I just want a relatively quick car and the b swaps are out of my price range. I would keep the z6 but I think a DOHC looks better under the hood. Plus, the ZC is alot less common than your typical b-series swaps and I can keep an automatic tranny which is also a less common sight. Arias makes low-comp pistons for a d16 and I was told by one of their reps that it will bring my cr to about 8.4:1. And with an auto tranny I'll have full boost shifts.

Thanks for the link and good looking out. I'll be doing alot more research before I even start the build. Not much aftermarket support for the ZC as far as internals go. Will make it all the more satisfying once done.

Rep the 423 y0!! I already mentioned that I'm not looking to run 10 sec et's. It'll just be quicker than my z6 and look a little nicer too. May end up having Ride Revolution hook it up once I get it built. It'll take a little money and time but once I start building the motor, I'll start a new thread with step by step pics and updates either on here or in the hybrid forum. Hit me up this summer when NOPI comes to BMS. May even see you at the street fights.
Listen, I appreciate all the feedback from you guys. Keep it coming. I'm always up for learning something new.

Also, Eagle says that their rods will work but the block will have to be notched. Darton doesnt make sleeves for the ZC but they told me that if I send them the dimensions that they can make me a set of custom flanged sleeves that will withstand 18 psi and I will only be running around 12 or 13 psi at most. There is also a thread http://sohchonda.com/v-web/bul...=6606 that shows ARP head studs from a Jetta and Golf will fit a DOHC ZC. Looks like finding internals won't be as hard as I thought it would.

I'm noticing this right now. I was told by Mista_Bone@SOHCHonda.com that I would have a hard time finding parts but so far so good. Does anyone know where I would begin looking for valvetrain upgrades ie. cams, valves, retainers, and valve springs. And how much more would I benefit from an extrude hone over a port and polish on the head? And how much would I benefit from a 3 or 5 angle valve job? Sorry for all of the n00b ?'s but I'm not too familiar with head work.

Yeah, but they do have quite a bit more potential for monster hp than a d-series motor does. Best bang for your buck horsepower, but i would rather take the road less traveled. A turbo zc... what kind of #'s have you guys seen boosted zc's make?

Just got word that Crespo, Crower, and Delta are a few places that offer aftermarket camshafts for the DOHC ZC. Still looking for valves, retainers, and valve springs if anyone can help out. Still need to know which is more beneficial: extrude hone or port and polish on the head? And benefits of 3 and 5 angle valve jobs. Thanks.

I'm running a ZC in my hatch right now..obd 1. I'm running the JDM P29 ECU, very hard to find...but I do suggest you run a OBD1 92-93 Teg ECU. I swapped my 95 LS ECu w/ the P29 and noticed my car ran smoother and felt quicker, but I was pulling a check engine light because of the O2 sensor on the ZC only being one wire...I highly suggest the 92-93 ECU...I believe those O2s are one wire.
Any D series parts will work in the ZC, w/ exception of the head...go to Crower, Crespo and delta, they got it all.
Check homemadeturbo, they had a built ZC running some mad boost.
Good luck...keep w/ the road less traveled...F$%K the haters...
it's all about the Ds beating the Bs

Right on
Thanks for the help. I figured I would end up having to change the ecu out. What is the code for the 92-93 teg ecu?

Thanks for the link. I'm checking homemadeturbo right now and looking at the setups that they are running. They have a wicked turbo mani http://www.homemadeturbo.com/t...ce_ZC/ on the zc and are aiming for 400 hp at the crank with 20psi. Can't wait to have my own. Not that much hp though. I think that 250-275 whp will suffice. Keep the info coming.

JG Engine Dynamics actually makes a lot of parts for the ZC. The have a few different methods of making hp in the head. You guy tell me which methods you think would be best for a turbo ZC with moderate boost:

Click ZC PARTS ONLY. Scroll down to the second page of the pop up window. Let me know your thoughts or opinions. Thanks for the feedback.

I forgot to mention that Jackson Racing originally made a ZC supercharger...don't know if it's still in production, but there is a company that makes an adapter for the CRX Si SC to fit the ZC i believe.

please do a write up on this. i am going for the same reasons you are. Also i don't wanna have to change my whole turbo set-up just for a engine swap. You can get the whole ZC swap from osakajdmmotors.com for $600! thats what i would do then build it, with my boost. but i was told to stay away from it due to certian problems in the swap. but i am doing more and more research on it.
Right now i got a free mini me swap i am gonna do. gonna build the head first (i think) so i can maintain all 12 psi i have been using on my stock d15 head. lol
But good luck and i will be back to read up on this thread as i want to be knowable for the swap also!

BTW, thanks for the link to Osaka. I was talking to a dude on thezcr.com about buying his motor for $200 but that is without tranny or ecu. Motor only. I believe that I will go with Osaka. What experiences has anyone had with them in the past. Let me know.

they are really only like a hour and 30 minute drive from my friends places in vt. They get motors there all the time. You can usually even talk them down. We have had a few motors that even came with performance parts, (cams, headers, ect.) for free. Also if you end up getting a bad part with your swap call them up and just yell a lil at them and they hook you up with a new one.
I was gonna get my motor from them for a 86 corolla i was gonna buy.
I am gonna go to them for my miata motor.
If i go zc i will go to them for my zc motor.
They just have some of the best prices around that i have seen.
