Default New Project - B20 in 91 CRX

I finally got a new project to work on: 1991 CRX DX auto - going with a B20Z stock motor with 93 Integra LS cable tranny. I have the parts for the manual conversion but I'm unsure of a few things. I'm not familiar with the B20 motor so I don't know how the intermediate shaft is setup. Will I be able to use the one that comes with it and then use the 93 LS tranny and 93 LS axles? What about the B20 pressure plate, clutch and flywheel? Will they work or will I need the Integra parts instead?

The 1990-1993 Integra intermediate shaft will work fine. It will bolt to the block as it does the B18A/B18B block. As for the axles, unaltered 1990-1993 Integra axles will fit this setup just as they would any B-series swap in a 4G Civic. Which is to say not very well. Do yourself a HUGE favor and don't use unaltered 1990-1993 Integra axles. Get a pair of 1986-1989 Integra axles, remove the inner joints, and use your 1990-1993 Integra inner joints. You will then have axles that fit PERFECTLY. There is no need to remove the sealing rings to make the axles work. As for the B20 pressure plate and disk, I am not sure if they will work. I personally used the Integra parts. You might give them a try to see if they work. The B20 flywheel, however, works fine.

you have to get a 92-93 clutch disk if your going to use a 93 tranny. with that axle thing i think it's too much trouble just use 90-93 axles i use em fine with my car gsr in a crx not a broken axle yet

A few other things I'm unsure of: I have a CRX Si motor harness, injector resistor box and injectors. I plan on using a 91 LS ecu and 91 LS distributor to simply things a little because I already have enough to do. I plan to have the ecu chipped for better fuel curves, higher redline, etc. Will the Si injectors work or will I need to use 90-91 LS injectors also? If they would work, would I still be better off with the LS injectors or do they flow near the same.

I'm pretty sure 91 Civic/CRX Si and 91 Integra LS injectors are the same. Atleast the part numbers at Autozone are the same.

FWIW: I'm running D16A6 injectors in my B18C1 w/ no problems.

Here's my parts list so far. Feel free to make any corrections or additions if I left something out:

ENGINE: 1999 B20Z
TRANSMISSION: 1993 Integra LS
CLUTCH/FLYWHEEL: B20Z flywheel, 1993 Integra LS clutch + pressure plate
ECU + FUEL: 1990-91 B18A ECU and distributor, 1994-95 Integra B18B intake manifold, 90 CRX Si injectors + resistor box, 90 CRX SI motor harness
MOTOR MOUNT KIT: HASport billet mounts
OEM MOUNTS: 1990-93 Integra timing belt side engine bracket
AXLES: 1990-93 Integra LS axles
INTERMEDIATE SHAFT: 1990-93 Integra LS intermediate shaft
SHIFT LINKAGE: Shortened 90-93 Integra LS shift linkage
THROTTLE CABLE: 1990 Integra
CLUTCH CABLE: 1990 CRX clutch cable
UPPER RADIATOR HOSE: 1990 Integra - trim to fit
LOWER RADIATOR HOSE: 1990 Integra - trim to fit

I plan on purchasing everything within the next few days so I hope to get an accurate and detailed parts list together. I don't want to get halfway through the swap and find out that I need something which I'll have to order.

94-95 Intake Mani, nice choice. Less vacuum lines, less hassle.
Your list looks good.
to research.

where did you pick up your B20, and how much did you get it for? What about motor mounts, Is this the kind of project that runs up some high numbers for a crx project? 1000 for the motor, 500 mounts, 100 ecu, 100 axles, or can you use some of our rex mounts?

I found a 1993 GS-R (B17) tranny today. I was wondering if the gearing in this tranny would be a little to hard on the B20Z motor? I know it was made for a higher revving VTEC motor, but I've seen people with similar setups like a B16 tranny on an LS motor.
I know that there were a few different cable tranny's from 90-93, so could anyone clarify which car/motor these tranny's are from:
S1, J1, A1, Y1, YS1

Does anyone know about the OEM engine brackets needed (not mounts) for this swap? I read on the HASport site that if you use a 94+ B motor that you need to use the 90-93 stock Integra motor brackets. Someone told me that I need the bracket on the timing belt side and the rear engine bracket, I need to confirm this asap.

Yeah, you need the 90-93 mount brackets. The bolt pattern on the 94-up brackets doesn't match the HAsport mounts.

About the GSR tranny, I had a '92 GSR. 80 MPH in 5th is around 4600 RPM. So, if you don't mind the revs, it'll definately help your acceleration.

Could you be a little more specific as to which ones - i.e. location on tranny/motor? I am probably going to order them new through an Acura dealer so I need to know exactly what ask for. I called once and asked about the brackets and they asked me why I needed them blah blah blah. So when I told them what I was doing, they replied - "It'll never work......."

The high revs this transmission will produce WILL be hard on a B20 if you do alot of high speed freeway driving. Non-VTEC motors with B16A/B17A transmissions should not be used as freeway cars. Consider such a car to be a city car at best. Or even race only.

would a b18c head on the b20 block be considered as a non-highway preferred vehicle too?

I never really took that into consideration, but the car will probably see a lot of interstate driving so I would be better off with the LS tranny. I guess having the LS will help later on if I decide to turbo the motor

The B18C head would not necessarily make a car unsuitable for freeway driving. Remember that a head does not affect freeway revs. But there are other things to consider if you go this route. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to build a reliable CR-VTEC. But any CR-VTEC will only be as reliable as the parts used and the competence of the builder.

You could always put an LS 5th gear into your GSR tranny. Then it would have all the nice acceleration of the GSR tranny in the first 4 gears, and the nice low revs of the LS tranny for the highway in 5th gear.

I got a link courtesy of B20ZKid with detailed tranny info for all B motors. It has about everything you would want to know about both the cable and hydro tranny's - gear ratios, production years, chassis codes, and more! Check it out: http://tiiite.b16a.com/Bgears.htm

I had a few people asking me general questions about B18B or B20 swaps in the 88-91 Civic/CRX so I changed my parts list to be more broad and cover both of these swaps. Please make any corrections and/or additions to my list if needed.

ENGINE: B20B/Z or B18B
TRANSMISSION: Any cable tranny from: 1990-1993 Integra LS, 1992-1993 Integra GSR, 1989-91 CRX SiR or Integra XSi (JDM)
CLUTCH/FLYWHEEL: flywheel to match motor or tranny, clutch + pressure plate + throwout bearing + pilot bearing for year and model tranny used
ECU + FUEL: 1990-91 B18A ECU and distributor, 90-91 LS or 88-91 Civic/CRX Si injectors + resistor box, 88-91 CRX SI engine harness, 1994-95 Integra B18B intake manifold (for B20B/Z only)
MOTOR MOUNT KIT: B Series mount kit: HASport, Place Racing, HCP, etc.
OEM MOUNTS: 1990-93 Integra timing belt side engine bracket and rear engine bracket
AXLES: 1990-93 Integra LS axles
INTERMEDIATE SHAFT: 1990-93 Integra LS intermediate shaft
SHIFT LINKAGE: Shortened 90-93 Integra LS shift linkage
THROTTLE CABLE: 1990 Integra
CLUTCH CABLE: 1990-93 Integra clutch cable
UPPER RADIATOR HOSE: 1990 Integra - trim to fit
LOWER RADIATOR HOSE: 1990 Integra - trim to fit
