clutch difference from 88&89 to 90&91

Ok i thought all d series clutches would work univerally throughout any d series but a friend told me 88 and 89 are different than 90 and 91. let me know what the difference is and even if there is a difference.

Your friend, surprisingly, is correct. The clutches are smaller from '88 to '89 than the '90 to '91.
The 88s and 89s had 200mm clutches I believe while the 90 and 91s had either 212mm or 220mm (I forgot which). Its like 8 3/8 instead of 7 7/8 or something like that. I forget the numbers exactly.

Also, the '88 clutches will ONLY fit an '88 transmission. Why? Because the '88 transmission used a 21-spline input shaft (the shaft that goes through the center of the clutch disk); '89-'91 transmissions used a 20-spline input shaft.
'88 clutch disks are smallest (190mm?); '89's got a 200mm disk, and '90 and '91 clutches got a 212mm disk. I *think* those are the correct measurements; at any rate, there were three different clutch disk diameters... 190, 200, 210... or was it 200, 210, 212?
The easiest way to make sure you get the right clutch is to KNOW what year your flywheel and transmission are, and buy the clutch for that year's transmission. I mention the flywheel because the flywheel's friction surface areas (where the clutch disk engages and grabs) also changed.
There are ways around all this, of course, but it gets a bit deep. The short version is, if you've got an '88 transmission, use an '88 clutch and flywheel and call it done (you can use a later - larger surface - flywheel, but you need to track down an "oddball" clutch disk to make it work). If you've got an '89 transmission, you can use an '89 clutch & flywheel, OR you can use a '90-'91 clutch and flywheel; since the '89-'91 input shafts were the same, they can use the later clutches and flywheels without a problem.

I thought '88 and '89 clutches were the same size. And not different.
If they are different, it would make sense the '88 is 190, the '89 is 200, and the '90-'91 are 212mm . 200,210,212 doesn't make sense. only 2mm from 89 to 90-91.

same size on the inboard end..
On the outboard the HF spindles are much smaller, same size as the civic standard that had a 4 speed.
