8 wheels?
But anyway, with that and a couple of other examples of electric motors making more sense for motorsports.... here's a proposal.
Bernie sits the teams down and says:
"Okay, we will have an average of 60 laps at all F1 venues in 200x.
You will be given 7 gallons of your current fuel to get you to the end of the race.
I don't care what powertrain you use. Go."
I think it would be interesting to see what they would come up with.

Is that really all that different from what Bernie already does?
OK, you can spend $50 million a year on motors, but you can only use one set of tires.
Oh yeah. I get it. That makes perfect sense.
Wait... No... It doesn't.

I dont know, 7 gallons of electricity doesn't go as far as it used to. I think that proposal would make for some interesting racing though.
So how do you balance the people's desire for the cars to be the pinnacle of technology, yet not have driver aids so we see the driver's true skill come out? Let that technology be funneled towards alternative power. I've been arguing for a while that racing at the F1 and NASCAR level should be something other than a typical fuel powered engine. Let racing improve the breed once again like it used to.
Yes, it's different, because brainstorming up the world's most kick *** high fuel efficiency engine systems is much more widely applicable in everyday life than that tire crap.

Back when I'd attended the USGP in Phoenix (~1990), part of the program were:
1) a solar vehicle race and IIRC
2) a tandem bicycle race.
It was sublimely absurd, bordering on absolutely stupid given the event in question.
Oh ... why not make F1 the drivers use turn signals or set up the tracks as figure eights ... hehe
That being said, it was great seeing Senna, Berger and Alesi drive, ... as well as waking up at the motel a few blocks away to the sound of F1 motors for an early morning practice session.

What? Turn signals are nibbling away at the atmosphere and consuming our nonrenewable resources? Fack!!
I'm just trying to point out that if racing can be helpful to society(without taking too much away from the sport), society is more likely to support it.

That's how we got NASCAR!
Maybe there shouldn't be any fuel involved at all.
Each team just submits its simulation of the event on a DVD and once the "race" is over the result is announced.
Maybe drag races should be shortened to 62 feet 5 and 3/4 inches, and run on rubber band power .
Maybe we go back to pinewood derby rules and allow the F1 teams all the means at their diosposal .... hehe

You didn't hear? Bush declared war on F1 to draw attention away from Iraq and New Orleans...the US is invading this week.
Or...maybe it's that the season is over...
