Should I expect engineering flaws in 2006 Civic (first year of this generation)?
Hi all,
I'm considering buying a 2006 Civic sedan EX manual tranny but one of my friends has raised the concern that this is the first year of this generation of the Civic and that there will probably be lots of annoying and somewhat-expensive engineering flaws in it. He has a 2002 Accord (last year of its generation) and read that the 1998 Accords (first year of that generation) had lots of engineering flaws. He recommends I wait a model-year or two. What has been all of your experience on first-year Civics? What do you all recommend? Thanks!
-Steve

The flaws will be covered by warranty so I wouldn't worry about it. If there are a bunch of them though it will get annoying!

I bought a 2002 civic and it had minor fitment flaws. I would wait for at least the 3rd year. I remember the 01 civics had a ton of safety bulletins (not recalls, but just problems that a lot of civic owners had). 02 had little bit less and the 03 had almost none at all.

you'l be fine, i bought an 01' LX Sedan when it first came out. Was my daily driver and never had any problems whatsoever. I drove it till this year when i traded it in for an 06' EX Coupe. If you keep waiting till you think theyll keep fixing all the flaws from the previous years, then by the time you buy dont be surprise when they redesign it the next year. just my 02. cents. Good luck.
Two things to consider. The first just waiting until more cars have gone through production. The folks making these cars made thouands and thousands of old Civics. They were used to doing the same thing hours a day. I would let the first few months pass before buying one, just to avoid the annoying rattles and squeaks of dropped screws in the bottom or the door or behind the dash.
The other point is what the other guys have said about bulletins and other issues. I have an 05 ep3 and have not had one issue (knock on wood). I know I shouldnt have any issues with a car with 8000 miles on it, but my point is I dont believe I will have any. I am confident that Honda has worked out the tranny issues and door seal issues and all the other stuff. For example my wife has a 2002 Jetta 1.8T and we have had nothing buy trouble, lots of odds and ends. My dad has exactly the same car as a 2003 and has had many fewer issues.
I guess I am saying I would wait a year or two, but if you can wait that long, hold off until after Christmas and make sure the production date was after Thanksgiving.
Good luck.

The same thing crossed my mind before I purchased my 2006 LX Coupe... Yeah, it's possible a squeak or rattle may surface at some point in time; but then I said to myself, it is Honda, not Pontiac, that we're dealing with here... Not to sound like some narrow-minded ricer here!
Seriously though, I honestly don't forsee how a company whose reputation for quality and reliability would allow a "half-baked" car to enter production just to advance the release date and drum up some sales. Of all the major manufacturers, Honda had the best September out of all of them (including the domestics with their "Employee Pricing" gimmicks) simply by having their annual "clearance" event which by no means meant that Honda was offering rebates or giving cars away for a song.
The new 2006 Civic is ready and I have full faith in my decision to have purchased my new car.
