Default wtf? I'm stumped, please help with Y8 head problem

Ok well a mech I know is putting my motor in for me. Well he took the head to the machine shop to get it decked. The machine shop said I need a special head gasket because it's a o-ring head. Something about how there is a gasket/or seal/or something that goes around the cylinders on the head...wtf are they talking about?

It is unlikely, but possible that the previous owner had o-ring the block/head. This process is done my machining in a groove to install an o-ring when using a copper head gasket for high HP engines. I highly doubt this is the case, because no one in there right mind would do this to a Y8 engine. So I don't see what is holding them back from decking the head. After decking, since you are removing material and the combustion chamber gets smaller you will have a higher compression and the valves will become closer to the piston during the cycle. He may be suggesting to use a thicker headgasket to account for the material removed to keep the compression and clearance stock. But I don't see how it will require it to be o-ringed.

Ok well I found a little mor info out. The machine shop said it was a race style head (it was built for a turbo motor from someone off honda tech. I bought it a year ago and can't find his contact information). Was port and polished with over sized valves.

I just bought a new cometic headgasket for it, so before I have the guy bolt it on I wan't to make sure everything is ok. I am going over there Fri. so I will snap some pictures and have them up.

you asked a stupid question, how do you do an engine swap. I guess after reading this post, he technically knew what he was looking for. Plus I had some of my own interest in finding some pictures of peoples ringed blocks, but didn't find any pictures, so I thought since I already spent the time might as well help. I guess you'll catch me in good and bad moods. Nothing personal, so don't take offense.

Hrmm...this sounds exactly what he was describing. Where do I buy the o-rings?

sounds like you have to custom make them, your engine builder should know if he truely is an engine builder

See I bought the head about a year ago. I was selling a turbo kit and the guy offered to trade. Well I finally got around to building a block for the head. I put it on and it smoked like crazy...so i was like WTF? Then I remembered I didn't take it to get it decked. So I take the head in and the machine shop brings to my attention that it is a o-ring head (what they called it)

Any way to reverse a ringed head back to stock?

to AndyR

It was 0-ringed. local speed shop said I either need a copper gasket or remove the o-rings. I just bought a new MLS cometic gasket and it will only caost $20 to remove o-rings. Crap...this project is getting expensive.
