Default Single cams...don't hear Vtec

okay this is the second single cam civic i have owned first was a mini me with a d16y7 bottom end with a z6 head, and i never heard vtec or power change. ok this one is a complete d16z6, and i don't hear or feel vtec with this engine. with the 2 b16's i had u could hear vtec. i'm just wondering if my p28 ecu same used in both cars is messed up.... and my s2000 vtec is really loud. i know bc of the dual cam. i'm just curious about what everyone elses d16's do.

d16 vtec is notorious for being quiet.

hook up an LED if you want to make sure, or an AFC2

dude its a single cam of course your not going to heal/feel anything. If you were expecting it to smoke the tires on vtec engagement, no

Nevermind my constantly-Rude-n'-angry fellow member above me. He is right though, Vtec doesnt really do much in SOHC. I had I/H/E with a grounding kit, a cam gear @ +4 and underdrive pulleys. I never really FELT vtec kick in until i got my timing adjusted, even then it just felt like my car was simply accelerating, not this "OMG **** THIS IS FAST" vtec that people around here claim it is. Oh, my Vtec wasnt loud until i got my V2 intake

I'm getting a Jdm B18c1 dropped in so i guess ill see soon how much vtec pulls on a DoHc

on the mini me, i actually thought it might not be gettin enough oil pressure so i ran an external oil line to the head to the service port... and still no difference...so i just did a homemade turbo setup....running 15lbs of boost for about 3 months, ran really good, no check engine lights...till finally it died..but after i pulled the engine to my amazement it was the turbo that blew a seal making my engine smoke soo bad. i put the head back on and removed the turbo stuff and put the engine back in the car and it ran fine.... but it was a tough engine.

Um, ya...15lbs of boost will do that!!! Why in the hell did you run that for 3 months straight?! Did you have some cross country race?!

Recipe to hear VTAK on Z6

1. remove intake tube.
2. uninstall P28 ECU
3. add PR3-J01 ECU
4. allow CEL to come on, and warm to op temps(CEL is KS, no effect, no 12v)
5. Rev to 8500, you will hear VTEC at 6000 like it's a B16.

I've had many SOHC/DOHC/ECU combos in my EJ1, so I know.

Hell, I had a stock P28 on my B16 when it first got swapped. Coudn't hear VTEC too well. And now, with B16A and S2 ECU, it's only as loud as my D16Z6 with PR3 ECU was.

*PR3-JO1 is OBD1 92-93 Teg XSi ECU. It's the 170 HP version, with a cable tranny.

Lol
i run a stock p28 with a slowtech muffler, header, cheapo intake and my vtec is crazy loud
it is only quiet if your whole car is stock, but then it is still evident
you sure something is not wrong with your car?

Not that it matters for ****, but if you want to hear VTEC engage on your D16Z6, do the following:

1.) take off your intake so you're running open throttle body
2.) remove your axle-back exhaust section
3.) go drive around till your car is warm and your oil pressure safe
4.) rev past 4400 RPM

If you can't hear VTEC with no intake and no axle-back, you don't know what you're listening for. I can hear/feel it with all of my **** intact and my D16Z6 is bone stock with 260,000 miles on it.

That would be 4800 RPM for the Z6, Arch

I can hear mad VTAK with my D16A6 from 1 RPM all the way up to 7200

ok, well i have a short ram intake, and exhaust, and theres no vtec engagement. no sound or any more power, actually feels slower. well heres what i think it might be. i got the ecu from Jim at motorvations, its p28 but originally out of a automatic car, he took it apart and changed something inside the ecu and said it would work...well this is the same ecu i used with the mini me swap...anyone got any ideas?

lol, Yeah I had a d16y8 in my 96 and I didnt even know it had vtec until I wired my b18c up and noticed the wires for it. All sohc have weak vtec. Its the economy vtec or some crap that only advances the intake valves or something. But the ADC(after duel cam) phase of my car's life is much more interesting. loud *** vtec and tires dont last very long either.

All I can say is Thank you (God or Honda) for dual cams baby...

US SOHC VTAK is not all that loud. I had my D15Z1 VTAK and I couldn't hear VTAK, but I could feel it. It went from buuurrrrrrr....to cough cough beeeeerrrrrrrrr.... Then after I put in my B18B, I couldn't hear any VTAK either. I wonder if it was because it wasn't JDM enough since it came from CT?

Huh? My SOHC hit's VTEC at 5300rpm. The best way to here VTEC on a SOHC is to not have a stock car. I have the following setup and VTEC is on the loud side when it kicks in and you can definitely feel it.

-Magnaflow 2.25 SS mandrel bent cat-back exhaust
-DC Sports 4-2-1 SS header
-Chromoly 8lb. flywheel
-AEM shortram intake
-Bone stock D16Z6 with around 55,000km-60,000km on it
-Always clean oil with no more then 3000km on it

The main thing is to have clean oil that is always at the full line. If you ever low on oil you'll feel VTEC being very "sluggish". None of these mods are very big as far as horsepower adding goes, but for a SOHC VTEC engine it sure does haul ***. It'll be better when I finish building my turbo kit and boost to 9PSI .
