Default Intakes for my gsr

I was looking up on intakes for my car (98 gsr sedan), and i was wonderin what would be better for my money. My friend has an HKS intake, but does that one peice really help that much? Would an AEM short ram be better? Generic brand?

Uh oh, better put on your flame suit. I wouldn't recommend making a new thread about intakes when there are probably already upwards of a 7.64 billion on this site.

But just to answer your question, you aren't really going to make much power from a filter or a short ram anyway, so it's more a matter of personal preference. If you like it quiet, go with the HKS filter. If you don't mind the sound, the AEM sri will probably net you a bit more power (I myself like the way it sounds so that's the route I would take). Since you're in Cali, I'd drop the extra coin for the AEM so you don't have to worry about the police bothering you, but an ebay special will perform just as well. Just make sure you put a quality filter on it.

If you really are looking to get everything you can out of your motor, get a CAI.

sorry for posting another one, haha cuz i was jus on the look out for some and wanted to ask some of you guys. If i buy the CAI wont i have to by a bypass valve for it also? And its in the season where it rains here, so i dont really want to worry about anything. I like the stock sound, but the 5-0's are really dicks in my city cuz theyre so bored. Also could u use an HKS filter on an AEM intake? maybe i'll get one first and den the other if anything.

The bypass filter is nice insurance to have, but depending on where you live hopefully you won't be running into too many giant lakes in the middle of the road (as you probably know the bypass valve only opens up if the filter is completely submerged). All in all, my recommendation if you don't care about a 1-2hp difference (assuming you don't plan on building a crazy all-motor car) then just get the AEM sri. A used one can be had for pretty cheap, check craigslist.org. And if you get the AEM intake, you don' t have to worry about how it sounds because you can't get a ticket for it anyway. Just make sure you get teh CARB sticker on there.

thanks for the help mjc. But what would be a good price for the SRI, and is AEM the best brand to buy or are there like no difference between the other ones?

Are you talking brand new or used? If you're looking for a new one, check ebay and check the vendor forums here, you'll probably find some pretty decent prices.

If you go used, which is what I'd suggest, look on craigslist.org, you'll probably find a bunch for dirt cheap. I've seen AEM ones go anywhere from 40 bucks to a 100, definately wouldn't pay more than that for a used one though.

As far as performance goes, the difference between an ebay sri vs. an aem. vs. an injen or any other company is negligible. Just make sure that if you do go with the ebay one, get a decent filter, not so much for performance but for the safety of your engine.
