Z6 Y8 head differences other than compression and flow
I know alot of you are gonna tell me to do a search.. I already have alittle but havent come up with much, I'm not making this thred for it to last long or anything, I just want to know if there is any difference from the z6 to the y8 head, other than the combustion chamber, and ports.. what does the y8 bring to the table other than compression that the z6 doesnt?
Y8 = Might have to be using OBD-2 components and more emissions.
Z6 = Staying with OBD-1
However, sticking with either OBD is dependent on the ECU, injectors, and distributors. I found that Z6 were plenty more common and easier to work on.

Also, the Y8 has the same distributor mounting points as Pre-OBD engines. For example, the Z6 distributor mount holes don't like up with the A6 distributor but the Y8 head will.
get a y8 chances are it will be cleaner and have less miles.
z6 valve cover looks cooler
with a y8 u can use any 92-95 non vtec dizzy, also crx/civic si dizzys bolt up but thats only if u want to run pre obd. z6 only can use the z6 unless u want to modify the legs.
y8 cam gear looks cooler (ha i know it doesnt matter), looks aftermarket
nnnnnnnnn ya

I belive its the 88-91 that work with the 96-00 with no modifacations, I witnessed for a fact today that my 90 CRX SI distributor bolts directly onto a Y8 head..
I have a y8 head, y8 block, and a z6 head, I am leaning towards the z6 head on the y8 block since I want to go turbo, but I dont want to have to deal with the distributor since I would stay obd0 and run a 'piggy back (is that what they are called?) controller' such as a apexi safv controller. or else convert only to obd1. and plus my z6 head looks mint.. no oil what so ever, compared to my y8 head that is dirty and is really full of black oil. but I also am wondering what timing belt, and head studs to use with a y8-z6 hybrid if I was to go with that set up?
edit: also would there be any pros or cons about doing a hybrid motor like so?

get the y8 timing belt.......
I have the same combo....I want to run it obd 1 though....how do you fun a y8 obd 1....do you use the obd 2 dizzy and put the obd 1 plug on it???

alright but if I had an obd 2 dizzy layin around (which I do) could I just put an obd 1 plug on it?
also I got a y8 head with a z6 block.....I got a y8 adjustable cam gear.....I set the adjustable cam gear at about -4 to be at TDC if it was a z6 head but since it is a y8 head I leave it a lone right.....
also how do you tell it is a y8 head.....this kid tells me it is and it has the y8 cam gear on it but the z6 dizzy bolts right up to it (td42u).....I am confused

obd1 have 2 plugs
obd2 has 1 plug
You can use an obd2 dizzy though. You just need to convert your wiring to a single plug. the obd2 is the same as the obd1 except for the plug!! (well and the z6 legs)

ha! if you guys have any added info on the A6 bottom with Y8 top... and obd 0 to odb 2 wiring... i'll need it... i fear a headache... i'm using the A6 intake manifold... i need injectors and a dizzy as well *shurg* i'm lost with all this stuff.
lol, oops.
I meant to send that somewhere else. uh. just keep your car either obdo or obd1. obd2 is a hassle.

I'ev got an obd1 Y8 motor, its fairly simple, and if i can say that, anyone can. I just used a p28, and a obd0-1 converstion ket, took the resistor box off and used some fuel injectors form a a 95 SOHC VTEC civic i had, and a y8 dizzy. works great, other than my o2 sensor doesnt work and my ecu was oringaly for an auto... but im gettin it socketed for uberdata as well as converting it to a manual ecu, and looking at some widebands, so that fixes it.
If your gonna end up pulling the motor spend the extra $50 and some motor mount inserts.

I had an obd 1 td42u dizzy that had an obd 2 plug on it....I just cut that plug off and wired it up to the obd 1 plugs.....all the colors were exactly the same......I hope so at least because this might be why I m throwing a code 9 that will not leave me alone..........
it only had an obd 2 plug on it because it was running an a 96 civic.......

right. so if it is originaly obd1 for a 92-95 then everything should convert back over..

if you want to convet to obd1 u can use an obd1 or 2 dizzy, they are the same, just as long as it bolts up. obd0 tho wont work unless u kepe it obd0.
so with the y8 head, u can use 92-95 dx dizzy (obd1/2), crx/civic si dizzy (obd0), or the y8 dizzy (obd1/2). either way you will need to deal with teh plugs.
as for headbolts u can use ur stock ones, they are ok to use no matter what anyone tries to tell you.
z6/y8 timing belt are the same, so use one of them.
i suggest converting to obd1. dont mess with a vafc or rpm switch. its easy too, i never done it but i got a wiring diagram offline and did it in about 2 hours. dont waste ur money on those conversion harnesses.

is there anything stamped on the head.....??? but this kid that sold it too me swears up and down it is a y8 head....but a td42u dizzy bolts up, it has the z6 valve cover,......but it has the y8 cam gear on it......I am massively confused

I didn't realize D16y8 (96-00 Civic EX) was OBD-1. They are actually OBD2. The OBD-0 distributors from 88-91 Civic/CRX non vtec SOHC motors bolt right on. However, you will need to run a VTEC controller to control the VTEC. IMO, convert over and spend the extra cash. Also, The Z6 heads will not allow your Old OBD-0 distributors to fit on it. It had a very weird Distributor mounting design on the 92-95 Civic EXs.

Worn headbolts are going to own you in the long run. After honda headbolts have been torqued, they tend to stretch. A potential loose headbolt will mess up your head and cause you headaches in the long run. However, if you do choose to use it. You can use the OLD HEADBOLTS at YOUR OWN RISK.

You can actually look on the head itself and it has stamp codes. If the number reads 96 and up then its a D16y8. Also D16y8 had square chamber ports but you might not be able to tell with all the valvetrain on it.

Other minor y8 head differences.
I know that the y8 head does not have a coolant bleeder going into it like the b2 and a6 do. The coolant inlet from a b2 will mount onto the y8 head without a problem.
y8 head gasket is cheaper than the z6 for some reason.
Thats all I can think of...

i know a y8 is obd2, i said that you can use the dizzy off a non vtec 92-95 (dx for sure, not sure about cx and vx), the dizzy code for the 92-95 dx is the same as the y8, only thing different is ud hafta alter the plugs for whatever you are running (obd1/2) a a6 dizzy will bolt to a y8 head perfect. an a6 dizzy will also bolt to the z6 head but u need to cut a leg and grind another one off, its been done numerous times on here.

you can reusre your headbolts. im my heallms it says nothing about replacing them. as long as you torque them down to spec you will be fine. there is a stretch spec on them but as long as you are running stock compression then you will be fun. if you are boosting then i wouldnt do it. they arent the one time use bolts, ive never had a problem reusing head bolts. and i think they are like 9 bucks each at the dealership!

Check my sig, I fully support the Y8 head over the z6...stock for stock the z6 outflows the y8 due to the symetrical ports, but with a good port job (mine was by joe alaniz -competition port) the y8 will prevail. What really does it is the y8 conbustion chambers, the "quench areas" will gain you more compression and advance. Builthatch and I have tons of info on this at http://www.d-series.org .
Like the sig says...160whp/120wtq, 30mpg daily driven on 94 octane. 12.25:1 comrpession.
PM me if you have any questions, i'm heavy into the d stuff!
