Ok, I made a thread about this before but for some reason I was unable to bring it back...

My gas tank keeps refusing to accept fuel. It's not full, I've driven over 200miles and it only let me pump about 3 gal before the pump kept stopping. The fuel gauge is also reading Full for the most part. I drove 220miles and it read about <2/3 tank.

Any ideas why my gauge would be producing a false reading and why I'm unable to pump more than 3gallons at a time? PLEASE HELP, this is highly annoying.

Nope. One night I filled up with about 10gal, drove for a few days, gauge kept reading full, then it came down to 2/3 after 220miles. I went to fill up and it only accepted 5gal... then I drove more after that and it's now only taking 3 gal until it starts stopping the pump.

[i usually fill up at 230miles with 9-10gal]

 

make sure no gas lines or anything are pinched

 

I'm more than sure it's not that. Anymore ideas?

 

ok so basicly the gas gause is sticking then right? the tank will let you fill it but only when you drive it for a while,

 

The gauge isn't physically stuck, nothing's wrong with the cluster... I checked the needle, pushed it down and it comes right back up, no problems.

The tank is taking in less and less fuel with each fill up. After reaching 120miles today, I went to fill up and it only accepted 3gallons before the pump clicked off. Something's wrong.... and no, it's not full.

 

Pull out the nozzel alittle bit and fill it up like that.

The problem got to be the fuel pump. I had a problem like that too, but it was on a corolla.

 

I'm in no way being sarcastic when I say this... I know nothing about gas tanks or fuel pumps...

...But the pump would cause the false gauge reading and stop me from pumping gas into the tank?

 

How would I get to the sending unit? After reading a few threads, it seems that MAY be the problem. People say its something about corroded contacts on the Sending Unit? I need to fix this asap before I find myself stranded on the highway.

 

mine goes almost 400 miles of 10 gallons of gas, you are saying that you usually fill up 9 - 10 gallons ever 230 miles?

that sounds like some really crappy gas mileage to me. after 230 miles i could understand only being able to pump in 5 gallons

yes, i only get around 240miles max out of a 9-10gal fill up, maybe I have a heavy foot or my b16 just isn't fuel efficient... but thats not what I'm trying to fix here. I've been filling the tank at 230miles for 2 years.

 

You get at the sending unit by taking out the fuel pump.

I belive you take out the rear seat, there youll find a panel you want to remove that, under that your going to find your fuel pump cover on the fuel tank.

Thats the cliff notes version.

Someone put sand in ur gastank?

 

my sending unit had a flat spot, i would be at a full tnak mark and would stay there for a long time and hten all of a sudden it would start to drop i removed the sending unit from the gas tank and use a multi meter and tested the unit and it was bad so i just replaced the sending unit and bam problem sovled. i think your sending unit is bad it cost me like 80 bucks from a honda dealership.

Mine was doing that for a while.

 

. . . . i have a problem liek that as well, exzcept mine only does it on a few select pumps, try hold the gas puimper jsut at the top of the pumping hole (sorry, not sure of the legit names so i use retarded terms) . . . l**** dont stick it in all the way, just hold it at the top but make sure you have it in just far enouph so the gas dosent bonce off the rim and burn out your eye *****. . . usualy works for me. As for your guage, maybe take your cluster out and check for loose connections.

You obviously didn't read any of this thread. Thanks for not helping at all .

This is a wierd problem. I suggest running the bitch completely out of gas and seeing how much you can shove in there at absolute zero. A good data point at zero could help solve this problem more than our speculations .

A couple of poster stated clogged vent. I did a search on the internet, and several other car forums mention a clogged vent tube will cause the problem you are indicating.

Air has to get out, for fuel to go in. I'm not sure where the gas vents are though, or how to fix it.
