h22a4 noise & funny idle
i have a h22a4 in an eg..i posted this i the hybrid area but got no responces so i thought i'd try here.
i have a 92 Vx with a H22a4 Hasport mounts.
except idle & random/occasional rattling/rubbing sound coming from the timeing belt area car seems to be running fine.
no codes, vtec is working.
as fas as the idle...after the car warms up it idles around 800...for about 30sec-1min then it drops to almost stalling out..bounces back & forth between 100-800 for about 10-15sec then comes back up to a steady 800 for about 30sec-1min & does it all again.
IAC seems to be pretty clean ...have played with idle screw.
can't figure it out.
now this sound isn't constant...it will make the noise for about 30sec-1min & then stops...& when it happens is random
it sounds like is coming from the timebelt?? belt lash? belt rubbing the cover? belt loose??
one thing we did mess up was we found out there was too much oil in the car for about 100-150miles of use..probably about 6-7qts?..that plus a bad valve cover gasket caused some oil leak.
would this have cause a problem.
maybe oil got over onto the cam gears & belt & causing a problem?

i have similar problem in my 5th gen... even though you have a hybrid, the sound too, is coming from the timing belt area. i'd like to hear any theories.

Could very well be the Auto tensioner getting ready to let go.
as far as the odd idle, check the coolant level and bleed the crap out of it.

thats what i was thinking after researching....
If i'm not going to heavily mod the valvetrain should i just get another auto tensioner or do the manual tensioner swap?
also...can any of this be done with the motor in the car?
i'm not trying to pull the motor if i don't have to

tensioner can be swapped with the motor in. I havent personally done the auto-manual tensioner conversion, but if you are just going to bolt up another auto tensioner it should be pretty easy. I think the biggest problem you are going to have is getting the crank pully off to remove the lower timing cover.
Get a helms manual for more detailed information on swaping this little bastard. Might i suggest putting a new timing belt and balancer belt in while you have this all in peices.
By far the worst part about working on these motors are in this order;
1. ATTS System ( includes all tranny related projects, clutch, flywheel etc...)
2. Timing belt. this goes without saying, i ****** hate installing new timing belts. @ries can vouch for that. lol
