Learned (the hard way) a couple of things about 2gen trans...kinda long.
The trans in my 86 Si finally went to that great H-pattern in the sky the other day, so off I go in search of a used/rebuilt unit. The trans is an A2K5 and I was under the impression that's what has to go back in. 85-87 Prelude Si or Accord Lxi. Got a price from my own company (CarQuest) on a rblt.-$935! So used it is. After 3 days of looking, I found one that supposedly came out of an 87 Si-$300. I get it home and clean it all up, take the 5th gear cover off and look inside. This thing was cherry. Clean, quiet and smooth when I spun it. Thought I'd really scored. Got a real good friend to put it in. He calls me and says it's all in-but the axles don't fit!!!!!! Turns out it was a base model trans-smaller inboard splines. Out it comes and my friend locates a rebuilt unit at his supplier-$450. Finally get the car back yesterday-works bitchin', but I notice it has taller gear ratios. My first thought is cool-better mileage. But I'm curious and I look up the code on the trans-E2Q6. 88 Accord DX/LX Carbureted! So bottom line is if anybody needs to replace their 2gen Si trans. there is at least one other (and more readily available) unit that will work.
