your opinion:
Ok, so after a season of semi-sucessful autocross I decided to sell off the little black hyundai for $2000 (with both sets of race tires) and get something more mainstream/competitive. Thanks to the joy that is craigslist, I've been found two potential vehicles that I can get for under $2000 for the pair. One is a 1986 CRX (red, 214k, 5spd), possibly an HF, for $1000 and a 1988 Civic hatch (blue, 4spd manual, need to get the mileage still) (not Si) for <$800. One would end up being the daily, the other would become the new autocross car. Leaning towards the CRX as the racer and the civic as the DD, but thats another discussion.
The other option of course would be a 1990 Miata with 175k that my friend owns. It has the short nose crank, but has been fixed and runs pretty well minus a hesitation off idle when cold (coolant temp sensor?). It also definitely needs brakes, but comes with a set of snow tires and the factory alloys. Its a B package car, so its got a/c, p/s, and the viscous LSD, good top, good clutch, and drives well enough once its warmed up. However, he wants $2000 for it, which while fair isnt the same as getting 2 cars.
So I'm looking for your take, would you get two civics or one miata, keeping in mind that I fully plan to autocross at least one of the civics or the miata next season. I know that many of you have had or have one or another or both so I hope this is alright to ask here.
Edit - wont let me edit the thread title, sorry for being vague

Having a dedicated track car gives you some nice tuning options that either aren't allowed or wouldn't be comfortable/safe on the street. However, it really depends on which class you're going to run in whether or not you'd take advantage of those anyway. Another nicety in having a track car is that if you break it on Sunday, you're not screwed for getting to work/school on Monday. Personally, I'd go for that setup, but that's just me.
IMO, it'd be worth saving up a few hundred extra bucks for the '88-91 Civic or CRX Si over the DX hatch. The Si gets you significantly more hp, MPFI, 5sp tranny, better gearing, stock sway bar and I think better spring rates (but don't know for sure). I've seen Si's go for around $1200 recently.
