autocross questions???
In the Washington, DC area, events cost $35 for non-SCCA members and $25 for SCCA members. I'd use those as ball park figures for event costs.
As far as prepping the car, make sure everything is in good working order. A tech inspection is performed on all the cars prior to running, and they check that all the wheels are secured with no loose lug nuts, that the throttle cable doesn't stick, brake pedal pressure, etc... Also, make sure everything that is loose is removed from your car.
In terms of modifications, don't do anything yet! The best thing to do with your money right now is to go to events and get seat time. Then if you want to modify your car, you'll have a better idea of what to do to make it better for you.
Spectators are allowed. Everyone has to sign a waiver when entering the event, but spectators are allowed. I've found everyone to be extrememly helpful at autox events, so don't be afraid to show up and ask questions. The DC region has novice coordinators who are very helpful if you're new to the sport, etc...
Some regions also offer schools. I took several in the DC region and they're a great way to learn about the sport and how the events are run.
