Default Friend looking at 2002 NSX...

Blue w/ Onyx, looks great and has low miles with no modifications.

...but it kinda has a questionable past. It was a leased vehicle, and went to auction and traded between 3 dealerships in 2 months. The questionable part is there is a Carfax report of 1,000 miles listed between 3 dealerships with no report of an owner.

I told him he'd want to get the fluids analyized to check for proper maintenance and abuse...and of course a compression test. Anything else he needs to look for?

Could those 1,000 miles be attributed to one, two, or all three dealerships? Interesting that there isn't a previous owner listed. I'd ask Carfax...

I don't think he's worried too much about the title...but I think he's worried about the car. He wants to know what kind of shape it is in. You know, if it has been ridden hard and put up wet. I know Hondas can take some abuse, and those 1,000 miles between the dealerships makes me think a few joy rides were taken.

Untitled cars held by dealers are driven for test drives, for transportation between dealerships, and for transportation by dealership personnel. They may or may not include hard driving or "joy rides".

Have it checked out by a dealership that does a lot of NSX service or independent mechanic that does a lot of NSX service. Two of the latter in Florida are First Class in Orlando and MCA in Miami.

Dontcha' think Florida is a little far? For a more local diagnostic, take it to my mechanice; Frank at 4Star in Tulsa. They do purchase diagnostics for free but may charge for something more intensive.

I assumed from the Carfax that the car is still in Florida. If the car is in Oklahoma, then sure, take it to Four Star.

no, the car is in Florida and is up for sale by a dealer.

The fact the car is in Florida would make me want to check it out more. I could care less about the 1000 miles. Cars get transfered to different lots and markets depending on which market wants which car.

Florida is notorious for being a state to wash titles though. I would look more carefully but not be turned away just because it has a 1000 unexplained miles on it.

Aha!

Ponyboy: back at you!

The dealership should be willing to arrange transport to another mechanic or dealer for an inspection. Obviously, you don't want to rely on the selling dealership for an unbiased evaluation of the car.

No, because you already know which title changes Carfax knows about.

I wouldn't worry about title changes, because it sounds like the history is already there (one owner as a leased car). Have it inspected, and see if the techs notice any evidence of body damage as well as mechanical problems. If not, that's about all you can do; go ahead and buy it if it checks out clean.

Arrange with the seller take it to Nabil at First Class (see link above) for him to check out (at your expense). He's the most experienced NSX mechanic in the area. It will be worth every penny - especially if it saves you the cost an airplane ticket.

I think your suspicion is well founded. That's what the dealer and mechanic did with my car. I like to forget about it.

As an alternative or addition, you can always hire a third-party auto diagnostic company. Or have someone look at it in the NSX Prime community. You're going to have to do the Google search for the independent auto diagnostic.

I would not depend on Carfax. I have had a car that got totaled. It took a long time for carfax to update the info.

I would see if the state the car is in can do a title search. They do them here in Oregon and its shows all previous owners.....even the the originating dealership it came from. I think it cost $15

On an expensive car I would not trust carfax exspecially out of Florida.

You would have to search each state for its records. Unless the car was registered in Oklahoma (it's not clear where the first owner lived), a search in Oklahoma won't turn up anything.

You can find links to the websites for the DMV for every state on this web page.

Actually if you do a title search in the state it's registered it shows all previous owners regardless of if previous owners are in the state or not. But you do have to request this from the state the car is currently registered in. I don't think they will allow you to do it from a different state. Call DMV and ask. Let us know what you find out.
