can blown amps be fixed?
..i have 2 amps sitting in my garage that are blown, one is a JL 250/1 and the other an older 5 channel apline (forget the model number)...
anyway my question is can these amps be repaired to original working condition, or should i just scrap them??

That will depend on how much it's going to cost to fix them, and that will depend on what is wrong with them, most repair shops have whats called "go ahead" pricing, decide what you are prepared to pay to have them repaired, tell them and if they can do the repairs for that price, they will go ahead and fix them, if they can't it will not cost you anything, but you will probably get them back in parts, the shop is not going to spend any time on something the can't make money on.
The other thing you can do is get an estimate, on the repair, most shops do not charge for an estimate if you go ahead with the repair, but will if you do not.
One last thing you can try, open the amps up and take a look, you don't have to be a tech to know that if there is obvious signs of severe damage, [damage to circuit board or "tracers" on board, lots of "blown up parts"] that it's probably not worth repairing.
That said, and although no guarantee, if there are no signs of damage, or minor damage, [a component "blown up" EG: a chunk blown out of an output transistor/ic] then it may be worth taking in for an estimate or a go ahead.
If you can solder and find something very obvious, you can try and replace it yourself.

FCM- Where do you get the word tracer from? The wires on a circuit board are usually refered to as a trace. Just curious if different fields call them something else.
Amps are just about the simplest thing to repair. Thats why people will always offer to take one off your hands.

It came from Don Wo, [Donyboy] he was the repair tech at Muntz, the first car audio store I worked at 30 + years ago, he was the first guy to to teach me anything about car audio electronics, but then he called capacitors "cups" and transistors "switchers" and diodes "gates" among other things, I wasn't about to argue with this 120lb, 4ft f**k all, electronics whizz, he could fix anything, and make elec. gadgets/circuits for anything we could think of, and he would do it off the top of his head, he designed the push button switcher for our car audio demo board in about 15 min. and we built it out of scrap parts, [except the LEDs and buttons]

That's about the standard minimum rate.
