F#%^ing Auto Tranny
Sorry, just need to vent. My 98 accord ex 4cyl with auto tranny just went out. The car drove so smooth without any problems the last few years except for a few minor jerk, which is normal for the accord. The car only had 76k on it, now it wont catch into any gears, it wil run, but will start slipping and wont shift after awhile. I don't know should I get the tranny rebuilt or replace. My friends and I flushed the tranny out, and noticed that the fluid is like mud, very thick and gunky. Any suggestions, should I replace or rebuild it?
Hearing that it won't engage doesn't sound to encouraging. But I've a few questions b4 I give it the "Dearly Beloved....." routine.
1) What color was the fluid removed; Gray, Brown?
2) Did you do a fluid change, or did you have it power flushed?
3) Did the D4 indicator start flashing?

I had a fluid change, the D4 did not flash, but my check engine light turn on soon after the gears started slipping. The fluid was brownish, but when i drained it out, it was thicker then motor oil. I think i need to replace it completely since there is a lot of metal particles in the fluid. A lot of plp have been telling me to get a H23 Auto tranny, is that a good idea. I heard it is much more reliable using another F23 tranny. Do anyone know if this is a direct bolt on?

If you get a replacement tranny and that one breaks, that is what i'd do.
My 2000 had teh same problem. I got my tranny fluid changed at 24k and by 31k my tranny was blown and the fluid was bad, with an evil color. I got a replacement tranny under Honda warranty and havent had a problem since...

You know, that's a thought. Why not give your local Honda Dealership a call and ask if you can have a sit-down to discuss your problem. If you've been keeping up with your required maintaince (Got Reciepts?) you may get some consideration from American Honda. (Maybe 50/50 on a new one......)
It wasn't uncommon that I went to bat for customers not too far out of warranty for major failures while I was doing Yoemans service (Service Managers') work at GM dealers in the NE.
If they had done the maintaince, and showed an interest in keeping the car 'up', it was surprising what GM bought as a "Good Will Adjustment".
Hey, it'll only cost you a phone call.

Goodwill warranty is a possibility. At the minimum they might go 50/50.... but if you have no dealership service records... never spent any money with Honda... they might tell you to go pound sand. It all depends on the opinion of the service manager and the zone rep for Honda. The transmissions on the 99-01 accords were warrantied to 100k miles because of longevity concerns. You might have some grounds for goodwill. As for replacing it or rebuilding it... I would def go for replacement. Most expensive option is getting a fully reman'd trans fron Honda... prob run you about 3g's. The next option is an aftermarket rebuild, and then finially a junkyard trans. Junkyard transmissions are a crapshoot. Maybe it will last for 75k.... maybe for 700 miles. You can't know. Some of the other suggestions are up to you... converting to manual, a different model A/T.... I don't recommend either of these, but if you want to try them go for it. Good Luck.

The problem is my accord is a 98, so i don't know if they will cover that in the warrenty. The second thing is that I never went to Honda to get my car maintained. I want to keep it automatic because its my brother's car. He also let my parents drive it, so I want to keep it an auto. I just want to know if a H23 auto tranny is any better, and is it a direct drop in? Thanks to all that replied.

As HondaTech Pro stated... I wouldn't try a different model trans if you are trying to maintain stock performance and longetivity. You may open up a can of worms. I would go with either a OEM replacement or quality remanufactured transmission. They may cost $$ but, the pros out weigh the cons. Remember that this is a car that is shared and not just your own. You need something reliable I can imagine.

Junkyards want 850-1450 for a used one, and they only 90day -6month warrenty. I am planning to buy this one off of ebay. it is a remanufactured one with 1yr, 12000 mile warrenty. The best thing is, it only cost a little over $1000 after shipping. My mechanic spoke to the people that sells the transmission, and he said this would be a better choice. Here is a link,

what do you guys think? Thanks

Just keep in mind that in case of failure you are liable to pay again for Labor. Its not covered unless you vouch for a platinum coverage and even then its only about 1/2 of what most places charge per hour. Thats not including the down time of not having a car, renting a car if necessary etc. Think about those things...Its better than a used one anyday though!
Thanks to all of you that replied, I decided to get it, since it is better than picking a random one up at the junkyard. I called around junkyards, they wanted 850-1450 for a used one. They offer me a 90 day warranty, which didn's sound so good. So i order a rebuilt tranny, and also bought the platinum warranty just in case. The grand total was 1360 shipped after the reimburstment of the core charge. I hope this one is good, at least i have 2yrs 24k warranty.
Also be sure to go over your electronics if the new transmission doesn't come with new ones. They are also a common cause of failure on the newer Honda/Acura transmissions.
