Default millermatic 185 help please

I just bought a millermatic 185 as my first welder. I am new to welding but i do ok. I do have a question about the GAS though. in the book it says some use argon and some use co2 some use mixes... My question is what best all around? and if the best is a mix do i need 2 bottles or can they fill the bottle with both?

OK as i bought the welder used... it has a filled bottle. so how do i tell whats in the bottle or isnt there anyway to tell? Also my weld beads look decent but i am gettign a lot of spatter. I tried all speeds and all power lvls. Still lots of spatter. So what could be the reason? the tip is a bit old as well as the tip sheild. could that be the problem?

THe bottle should have a lable on it, if not I would just go exchange it for the right gas.

replace your tip&shield and see if that helps. if not increase the gas. the regualtor might be faulty as well. the gas helps cut down on slag, so i would check that first. but thats a good welder, how much did you get that for?

I will get new tips and all that see what happens.. the gauge on the regulator says its at around 32 so i dunno what that means.
I got the welder on ebay
it came with the welder , spoolmate184, 3foot bottle, gauges
all for 861 plus tax
BUT the spool gun doesnt work so i have to see if i can get it fixed but the guy who sold it to me said he woudl split the cost of the repairs.
