Get ready for the deluge of responses on this subject. It's a long time favorite.
It'll be like
"I love my xxxxx brand cat back, it's RAVE man"
or
"Don't buy xxxxx brand cat back son. It sucks farts from dead seagulls!"

pardon: have to take a d...p

I've got a Magnaflow cat-back system (Non-Ebay) which I'm more than happy with. Nice deep tone. But one thing you will have to remember is that the single wrap mufflers will drone into the passanger compartment. I handled this by lining my trunk area with Dynamat and latter Brown Bread Sound Deadening material.

...you know the drill.

if you are just changing your muffler for the sake of the way it sounds, then you must just try it and see. GL.

So what do you do if your looking for POWER AND SOUND... not just for the "bumble bee" effect. I've been looking into an ugly black coated flowmaster set, a magnaflow full catback, or a universal borla muffler (i'll have to fab up the piping)

I havent heard many positives about flowmaster sound on imports, due to their smaller engine size. Magnaflow and Borla are both good brands.

And if you're looking for performance, a muffler wont do it. You'll need larger diameter piping as well. And if you dont want a nasty blat to go with that piping, you'll want a resonator in the pipe.

All true. MagnaFlow (like most all a'market manufacturers) use single wall stainless 2 1/4" single wall mandrel bend pipes, an incorporated Resonator in the Intermediate pipe, and a Flow thru (perforated pipe) Stainless Muffler with rolled Stainless Tip. The whole she-bang is polished within an inch of its' life, and fits like a glove (first time )

The 2 1/4" pipes are a concession to performance demands of further system upgrades since stock engines get away with marginally smalled sizes.

But the quick of it??

The tone and volume (Db's) are controlled by these:
Converter
Resonator
Muffler
Underhood and cabin noise are controlled by these:
Header wall thickness (Gauge)
Tubing wall thickness (Gauge)
Muffler design and number of case 'wraps'

The only way to truely pick a system for you is to lurk where a lot of car guys congregate (A&W etc) listen for a system you like (in a car like yours) and ask what it is.
No amount of audio files off web sites is going to do it for you

P

edited for $%#^* spelling!

I know the importance of changing the exhaust piping, resonators, cat converter, etc., but what about Borla doesn't make an exhaust system for a 90-93 accord like mine. How about universal mufflers? Are they any good?

well, if not the Borla - how about a GReddy Evo2

GReddy EVO2 Exhaust Systems 1990-1993 Honda Accord - Catback ...

or an AVMS system from these guys
http://www.streetracer-accord....s.htm

or APexi Exhausts from these guys:
http://www.importperformance.c....html

There's a whole bunch of sourses out there, but I'm not going to spoon feed them to you. Do a Google!! search and start reading up.

Universal mufflers are a crap shoot, if you insist on that route, ask your local muffler shop. They'll have a better idea of what will work.

I'm sure you want a nice sound... so.. why don't you get a full exhaust... ..from cat back to muffler.... get a 2.25" pipe... and chose a descent looking muffler.... ...unless you want to sound like a ricer with the crispy sound of "discount auto parts specials".... lol
