How do I know if a motor its legit?????
Like the title says guys, I want to know where can i run the numbers from a block to check if its legit or not???? Do all motors have a vin number on them or do I have to check it by the number under the engine code????
Just talk to the local police.
In reality, just telling the seller that you intend on bouncing the number off of the police should give you a good idea of if it's legal or not. If the guy doesn't want to give you the number until he gets cash, run away.

Engines & trannys didn't have to have a VIN plate until about 1996 or 1997 or something like that. First digit of engine block serial # can tell you what year, based on when that engine type was first available.
Everyone has their block serial & before it's stolen. It's right there on the block. Few people bother to read it & write it down...

I know how to get the serial number of the engine by using the vin number. How do you get the vin if you only know the engine serial number?

Supposedly, the first digit tells you the year, like this...
1 for the first year that engine was available
2 for 2nd year, etc...
0 for an engine that wasn't originally installed in a car. Say a new engine from the dealer parts dept?
I've heard this, but I'm not absolutely sure. I'm still waiting for anyone to tell me an example that contradicts it.

most engines have a serial# but sometimes when u buy a new block from honda, there are no # stamped on it.
some unscrupulous people have the # grinded off.
to be safe just get a receipt from the seller with his address and tell#.
