do this before you attempt to ride your own bike and drop it.

I tought myself on my 94 cbr600....I've ridden 700 miles, I'm doing great so far. This guy though.....just his post scares me.
Do some research man, read some books, read the threads, read the sticky, its not hard. The fact that you're lazy enough to post a thread such as this with such a generic question makes me think you definetely need to take the MSF course.

is it really that hard to teach yourself?
i dont have my license but i plan on getting it very soone cuz i want a bike in feb for my bday. i had never rode anything over like 50cc or my friends moped but my cousin bought an 04 r1 and i was watchin him ride it. ive always loved bikes and always wanted to ride one but never got the chance to cuz nobody had one. well after he got his i hopped on and went for a quick spin, it was my first time but i knew the concept of it so it really wasnt that hardand after 10 mins of riding the only part i still had trouble with was turning. but man did that **** have some power!! i think you can teach yourself, just do it in a residential are and dont go over 25 not on a busy street where ppl go 50.

just because you can move a bike and know where the controls are doesn't mean you are a good rider all it means is that you can move a bike. the same logic applies to learning a car, just because you can move a car in a parking lot doesnt mean that you are ready for ruch hour traffic in down town NY. you might be able to make it home without crashing but you are taking a big risk.
sidenote: just because you were able to ride your buddies R1 in a parking lot dont let that go out and buy one.

hey hey hey i wasnt in a parking lot....i was in his neighborhood
and there is no way i will ever get an r1, that has soooo much power. i didnt get above 4k rpms and barely moved the throttle and i could feel the front end lift up(not off the ground) and all i can say is
too much power though thats why im getting an r6

If you havent taken the msf course and dont have someone to help you Id suggest you dont ride the bike until you do. Teaching yourself how to ride a motorcycle isnt the best of ideas nor is learning from people online. Good luck and be smooth.
Learn to counter steer so you can turn sharp..It sounds weird but to make a hard right you would actually steer the bars to the left which make your bike lean hard to the right and to make a hard left just do the opposite. Oh yeah take the MSF...

word! be careful out there. Just because you can ride around the streets does not mean you're a pro rider. keep that in mind!
