Default Will Toda C cams work with standard compression? 5 questions in need of answering

hi guys,

1.) i've just bought a pair of Toda spec C camshafts. Can't wait to put them on my B16A1. Will these cams work if the engine is standard? I've heard of jun3 cams working on standard engines. I know for high duration camshafts, high compression is required to make them work properly, but will the standard compression be fine for now until i get my high comp pistons?

2.) will it run properly without any modifications to the ECU? IE stock OBD0 ECU. Stock engine with Toda C cams and uprated valvesprings, retainers. (i know they won't be optimal, but will they work? Ie some gains, although not optimal, but still more power than standard cams?)

3.) Will the stock retainers hold up to high RPM and stiff valvesprings? I know they are swapped to reduce weight, but is strength its weakness too?

4.) What sort of open seat pressure will be required to rev safely to 10,000rpm? Is the seat pressure the determinant or other factors?

5.) Is it a defnite must to change the LMAs? if they are working fine, will it be alright to keep them?

Thanks for answering my questions.

ill try to help where i can...
toda c cams are not gonna work with ur set-up....**** im running sk2s2 cams on my stock block b16 with flat valves and 2 layer HG and its still too much cam for the stock block...
it will run with the stock ecu but it would be starved for fuel...plus there will be no benefit of having those cams and only bein able to rev to 8k...
im assuming u have a 1g b16 since it has an obd0 ecu...so yes the LMA needs to be swapped out with that of a 2g b16/gsr/itr/prelude w/shim...the nipple on stock ones were not made large enough to support high lift cams...

u should have done all this research before u bought cams...if anything u will lose power with these

It will run like crap

It will run like crap on a stock ecu and you risk damaging your engine

3.) Will the stock retainers hold up to high RPM and stiff valvesprings? I know they are swapped to reduce weight, but is strength its weakness too?

Stock retainers are weak, they do not last at high rpm and increased spring pressures

4.) What sort of open seat pressure will be required to rev safely to 10,000rpm? Is the seat pressure the determinant or other factors?

why do you need to rev to 10k? stick with rm gen2 springs and retainers or omnipowers

5.) Is it a defnite must to change the LMAs? if they are working fine, will it be alright to keep them?

Yes, you will need to change your lma's to itr's, 96-2000gsr's or prelude lmas with a shim

Thanks for answering my questions.

I would not recomend those cams for a b16a

That about sums it up. Like was noted above, pretty much everything you asked can be answered with a No.

Thanks for the info. I have CTR pistons on order and i will fit the pistons before the camshafts. I am just excited and was wondering if the cams would work on the standard compression. I know that high duration and lift cams won't work well on low compression engines.

Finding the LMAs gonna be quite tough, plus they don't come cheap at all.

What is the cheapest way to tune the ecu for the cams to work properly? Something i can perhaps learn to do myself?

Search on the Prelude LMAs, they are $8 per instead of $32.

I've seen Toda C's work well in a stock (with bolt-ons and tuning) B18C5. You may be able to pull it off with a really thin headgasket and maybe some flat valves if your tuner knows what he's doing.
