After two years of begging to fix up her car I finally get the ok. I'm searching for H22a's on Ebay but she insists I stick with the auto transmission I have two powerestrokes 1 race 1 work and they can handle 4-6 hundred horses and tranny's are still reliable with some tuning and billet discs etc. I'll probably build this car up to 3-400 hp So my question is what transmission mods are needed to achieve moderate reliability on 96 accord auto, or is it even feasable with the auto. Let me know. I haven't bought the engine/tranny yet so I can go either way...but was told I could keep same tranny with the swap.

PS I was looking at the level10 rebuild kits but after a quick search on this sight it seems this isn't the way to go. Any better ones out there?

I don't know anything about the Accord autos, but I noticed you were from Houston and I had to post! Where abouts are you from? I grew up on 288 just south of Pearland. Can't wait to get back. My wife is in the Coast Guard and expecting orders soon, so there is a chance I will be moving to Galveston this Christmas. Crossing my fingers.

 

If you're moving to Galveston, Tx; I'd seriously think along the lines of renting. Of what I've determined about Force5 Hurricanes, Galveston is NOT a place I'd want to build my dream house. Those 25ft Storm Surges can be a bitch!!

As to "I10HaulR's" question, I'm prone to turbo's anyway, and I think it would be a blast. Limit it to 8psi, add a msd ignition control, an EFM, a good A/F curve and a trans oil cooler and have fun.

How much HP will the auto tranny hold though? I know people with higher horsepower (see: turbo) on the 5spd have trouble keeping their transmission working the way it should. I've never seen any upgrade packages for our 5spds, much less for the autos.

There is a 25' seawall that runs along where all of the businesses are, but when the houses start, the seawall ends. All my life I thought that was kinda weird, but I don't like Galveston very much to begin with. I'm excited about moving there because I would be close to Houston. I would never build a house on Galveston island... that's just retarded.

 

That's why I made the suggestions I did. The package I discribed would get about 200 to 230 hp to the wheels, without having to kick the engine past 4800rpm ( like required of a vtec H22. (co-incidently the same power ranges normally seen by V6 Autos and '94-'95 Prelude SI VTec Auto)
Granted, the H22 has some additional advantages over the F22 (IE: additional oilers) (more ready availability of internal engine parts), but the F22 is in the correct range of required compression ratios (particularly the USDM versions) for Boost.
Both the Automatic Trans AND the 5spd Manuals have issues, as do the CV Joints on the Front Axles. So you plan accordingly (no pun intended)
If the Auto gives you pause you can have it built up, or you can buy the pieces and have it done locally.

Galveston is a bizzare city. I don't know the last time you came down, but Galveston is growing fairly rapid. The downtown district night life is drasticaly improved from a few years ago, hell we had a choice one night to go to downtown houston or G-town to go party and half our friends voted on Galveston??? They're also trying to get rid of all the local riff raff. The housing market is also growing(bizzare part) with old house renovations poping up everywhere...in a few years if no other cat5'start blowing through Galveston might actually clean itself up!

if you wanted to keep the auto and make serious hp like you're wanting, get the auto tranny built. Level 10 will let you send in your tranny and they will rebuild it, etc... to beef it up.

I'm sorta on the same path cept I'm just looking for around 200hp or so for my gf's 96 ex. Caught between swapping a H22 auto or boosting the F22 auto. All in all, I would suggest the level ten package for your needs as well as a Earl's or B&M Racing oil cooloer for your tranny. Maybe you'd even wanna add a cryo kit for the oil cooler, I'm not sure but the hp figures you're looking to get seem that a cryo kit for the oil cooler is justifiable. Anyways, good luck and if you go with level ten let us know how it works out since I'm wondering about sending them 2 trannies to work with.

Hey, I'm not too far from you then. I'm right at 45-S and the Beltway. Anyway, at the very, very least, you're going to want to get a trans cooler. I've only seen one guy on here (that I can remember) with a turbo, auto-tranny Accord, but it says he takes it easy on the transmission. (i.e. doesn't floor it right from a stop, lets off a little when the tranny shifts, etc.)

99% of ppl who turbo their automatic w/o upgrading it end up blowing it in a very short time. i don't have any experience with level 10, but i would recommend some kind of tranny upgrade.

The H22 transmission is made to handle more power than your current transmission. But at 3-400 hp it's still just a matter of time before it goes. Level 10 might be your only choice.
