Default The freaky Vett crash at Putnam park

from:
http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6643

Cliff notes:

something broke at the end of the front strait, and sent him spinning off into the grass. The car was going 120+MPH when it went off. The car went about 200 yards in the cold wet grass before it finally hit a fence and fence post. Part of the fence came into the car! It missed several roll cage bars my less than 1/2inch and went strait for his back! Luckely he is ok and should have a full recovery in 8 weeks of healing.

Wow that could of been real bad! I hate to think what would happen if his cage had let the car cruple up even a few more inches.

That is simply amazing that that pole went directly into his back like that!!!!

Wow I didn't know about the pole part.
Glad to hear that he is recovering tho.

As open of a track as Putnam is, we still had 4 quite big incidents last weekend. A Miata stuffed the tire wall at T9 during qualifying; the infamous flying miata during our Group A race; a E30 BMW hit the guardrail at T10 at HPDE, and the said Vette with a pole stabbing thru it..... But luckily no one was seriously hurt.

Damn! I had heard a rumor while we were there about it piercing a pole or something but I had no idea it was like that.

You guys really should see the path this car took. It went off the track, through a fence, and then directly through the main gate. Not like he hit the main gate or anything. The car literally slid out onto the access road and split right through the main gate poles. It even rode the access road over a little bridge that crossed a little ravine. So, even despite how the car looks, it could've been a lot worse.

That made me laugh. I guess if it was me, I'd want to hang the pole in my bar or something. Wonder if they'll send him a repair bill?

When I saw the Vette on the other side of the access road I thought they dragged it there, I never would have guessed he made it that far.

I'm glad when guys share stuff like this so we can all think about our safety equipment and priorities.

Me neither, that really suprised me. I can't beleive there isn't atleast an armco barrier between the track and the access road.

Its safer in a Steel car. Than a fiberglass one. Glad the driver is ok.

<Insert comment about closed-face helmets here>
