Amp keeps shutting off.HELP!!!!
OK I got one 12" Sony Xplode thats rated 1300 peak and 350 RMS. I got a Fosgate amp thats 900 X 2. Theres also a pretty big amp kit connecting all of it together. ANyways we hooked it up and it was working great for like a week. Then the amp starting cutting on and off (the power controller up front stayed on though). I thought it was the skinny *** speaker wire (stupid I know) so I changed it to the right wire. Fixed it for about a day or so and now its back to cutting on and off while listening to music. I lifted the hatch and it came back on after a minute or so and played fine, also when I took it to one of my friend's shop, with the hatch up I played Lil Jon and it didnt cut off once. So I thought maybe it was overheating. Well now its doing it as soon as you turn the car on so I know its not overheating, plus the thermal light isnt on, and the amp's not hot. I juggled all the wires and they appear to be connected fine. When the amp is cutting on and off the fosgate light goes on and off. What could be causing this???? Its really annoying and embarrassing ><:
Is the "fosgate light" is turning off and on then the amp is turning off and on, [yea I know daaaa] there are more the few reasons for this to happen, one of the top ones is as B18C_EJ8 mentioned, the ground, others are power and/or trigger, or a problem in the amp itself, do you have a multimeter so you can check and see if you are "loosing" power, ground or trigger when the amp cuts out?
A not so uncommon problem I have seen is a loose of power due to a defective fuse on the main power cable for the amp, if you have the large glass type, [AGU], even if it looks good replace it, this type of fuse and fuse holder has a lot of resistance in them, and when drawing a lot of current through them they, [the fuse] can get hot enough to melt the solder that connects the fuse filament to the end caps, making for a poor and/or intermittent connection.

Seen that first hand, and felt like a complete idiot after f'ing around for an hour trying to troubleshoot a similar problem, and couldn't for the life of me figure out why this amp had no power when the fuse "looked" good...

haha well i found out what the problem was......sort of. The fuse on the power wire was just loose. I'm used to the type that you open and put the fuse in, but this one was weird and we didnt see that you had to take off the plastic fosgate thingy to tighten it....so since then i havent had a aproblem today...i feel retarded...subs arent my forte......but anyways at least nothing was broken..cause im poor
Ohhh.. You've got the new style Fosgate amp kit with the big maxi fuse... Yeah, there are 2 allen screws in the holder that cinch down the fuse... But you knew that...
I actually didn't realize that either the first time I used one...
Glad you got it fixed!
