It happens to me sometimes, I've also been wondering what it is.

The fact that your car won't start makes this abnormal... If your car isn't starting and you're smelling fuel, you probably have a leak.

Did u check for spark? If there is no spark, the car definitely will not start which means the fuel is flooding the combustion chamber depending on how many time u have cranked it. This will lead to the smell of fuel.

Actually it could be a number of different thing, but checking for spark is the easiest to do first.

If you cranked the motor over for awhile or pushed the gas pedal at all you could have flooded it, which will smell like gas. However If you smelled gas but car didn't start that leaves you with no spark with is very easy to check for at plenty of different places on your ignition system.

heh, cranking the motor over for a LONG time will flood the engine, but on our cars it has nothing to do with the gas pedal. this myth about flooding due to pushing the gas pedal comes from the days of the carburetor.

yes, smelling fuel is normal for anything running rich. in your case, it's running super rich b/c tons of unburnt hydrocarbons (gasoline) are exiting the engine. i smell it all the time. 240's run rich as hell, and to boot i've got no converter.

Normal... especially if the car won't start.
