Default Tranny options...

..well, blew mine yesterday. I'm at a loss of what to do.

1: Rebuilt. $900.00, warrenty is 12 months or 12,000 miles parts/labor.
2: Replace. HondaWorks, who I'll be using, will charge me $1,200.00 to replace it.
3: Replace with a tranny I find. They'll charge me $330.00 to put in a transmission that I locate. Unfortunately, GSR transmissions are in high demand now days.

What do all you folks prefer? And please, refrain from the usual, "splurge and buy an ITR tranny" bit. Like most people, money is tight.

I'd say buy a used one! I waited to get one for my Civic SOHC and I picked one up for $140 used off the local classifieds. Shop around man! DOn't forget to replace the clutch while you're at it.

I agree, I say go and try to find a used one. I did that with my auto to 5-speed swap. I did pay a little more, ~$500-600 but that was for the whole deal, pedal assembly, stock clutch, etc.

However, if you can handle the $900 or $1200 one, why don't you do that? I mean, it's a brand new tranny and you have a warranty. I'm sure the HondaWorks one is built pretty tough too and can stand up to a lot of abuse....I assume so, at least.

Good luck.....hey, I remember you off of Purehonda. That was my first Honda/Acura forum. I was a lowly, slow, automatic Integra....now look at me. ::sniffle::

How'd you blow your tranny? What happened?

Well I'm not sure how effective this would be, but I've heard others talking about replacing the GSr tranny with a B16A tranny. Primarily because the gearing is closer than the Gsr which would would get you better acceleration, third gear isn't quite as long either. So that might be an option. Opinions on this from others would be nice, since I'm thinking I might do the same sometime.

IMO buy an LS tranny...gears are PRACTICALLY the same as a GSR (really cant tell) and the tranny wont be ragged on like many GSRs would be. Especially since the dork who crashed the GSR, making the tranny available, was probably ragging the tranny.
I paid $400 installed for LS and put a CM stage 4 in it. When I change the clutch im gonna have the gears changed from the GSR tranny that I kept into the LS.

The bearings were already bad on it. It was just a matter of time before a downshift did some further damage.

I've inquired about vtecvoodoo's transmisison, I'm evaluating the price right now. The other gentlemen who has his 2k1 tranny for sale, please check your PM's. Thanks.

I'd love to replace it for the right amount of money, and then go to town on my old one, tearing it apart, studying it, etc. That'd be my ideal solution. It's just a matter of getting that done, and locating a good transmission. GSR engines and transmissions are hard to come by these days. (darn hybrids )

i dont feel like breaking down your entire post, but you could not have been more wrong. the gsr tranny makes a huge difference, and if you dont think so....then you obviously haven't been in a car with an LS tranny that went to a GSR...visa/versa..

Yeah, theres hardly any difference between a 4.4 final drive and a 4.266?? You obvously have never driven one or the other. The LS tranny SUCKS, the only thing it is good for is like a 300+ hp turbo car. Anything else, go GSR or better yet, ITR. An ITR tranny will really wake your GSR up.

immortal, not really. I have a GSR that went from GSR tranny to LS tranny. I am talking 1st and 2nd gear ONLY. Its hardly noticeable if noticeable at all. I dont feel like arguing with you about this b/c Ive read your posts on forced induction and youre right about most things.....im just disagreeing with you this time.

nfn15037,
youre selling indiglo gauges....need I say more????

well maybe I should have asked what car this is going on....if this is drumsy the mod from the extinct purehonda, then I know hes a SCCA kinda guy. Nice black teg btw. Then LS tranny would not be good 4 U .....I was 'Vtecturbo' in pure honda and planning on 350 hp + and thats what I did.

Im surprised you would post this topic btw???? you should know the answer to this.

Yeah, thats really helpful Ill just say this, my friend has a 92 VX with a built LS/VTEC. I have a GSR with boltons and an ITR tranny and i make 161 hp. I can roll his car. And i dont think that anything to do with me having less weight or more horsepower, its the GEARING. The LS tranny, does, in fact suck *** even more than the GSR tranny. And about the indiglos, who ******* cares?

Sorry folks.. The LS is definately NOT the same or close to the same. Maybe in writing they do. I had both of them in my car. I dont know much about gearing but I do know with the LS/SE tranny you will FALL OFF VTEC range (1-2-3 shift). BTW my LS on 80 mph is at 3K compared to my GSR at 3500 on 5th gear. These are just facts from what I have on my car. So if you dont believe me then fine. Go ahead and find out the hard way.

Rebuild it for $900. If you're low on cash, option #2 is not so good. Option #3 is not so good also. You may find a used GSR tranny for $450-$600 plus labor of $330, so it's close to the price of option #1. So you might as well go for option #1 since you'll at least have some sort of warranty, whereas with a used one. there is no guarantee it's any good. Good luck!

3500 in 5th at 80mph is wrong because on a GSR with stock gearing, you can take the speed in 5th gear and divide by 2, giving you the RPMs you are turning. For example, Im going 74 in 5th. 74/2 =37, so you are at 37(00). This only works in 5th gear.
