i got a 954 at a local auction without keys. i took off the triple with the ignition attached and took it to my local honda motorcycle dealer, thinking they could cut me a key from some kind of code or vin.

the rep told me that he couldnt do it, there was a code on the back of the actual ignition but he said that he couldn't cut it from that code. he showed me his little book and explained that the code must be a letter, a,b,c, or d, and two numbers. sometimes these three characters would be followed by more, but they are not used. so he basically told me he could not help me.

i need help. i need to have a key made for my ignition so i can use, or take off the gas cap and trunk lock. otherwise i will have to pay to have a locksmith look at it.

please tell me about your experiences with honda motorcycle keys and recutting. maybe i have to remove the ignition from the triple to see the code? maybe its not do-able on the 954? maybe my local rep is wrong? help.

 

Find junkyard 954 w/ key......buy ignition, gas cap and trunk lock.

you *******, haha i know that i can just go and buy another one, but here in hawaii we dont have cheap junkyards with late model superbikes lying around. i would have to hit ebay, but expletive that they should be able to make me a key!!

 

I work for chrysler parts.. GM, Mopar and Honda keys are all the same... passenger vehicle/truck/suv wise... we do this all the time for lot cars and i do it for my friends/family that im close with if they lock themselves out of their cars n stuff. You can take a VIN and request at the dealer with proof of ownership and ur license proving ur you give them the VIN and they can cut one. now ive looked at some of these honda keys and i'll tell u a regular key usually has like 8-10 cuts/depths my honda key looks about the same but with a longer shank. Give it a try but be sure to make ur request in person with ur registration and license in hand.

since you already have the ign out, just take it a locksmith and they can cut you a key based on it

 

if you have the title or some other proof of ownership they should be able to cut you a key using the vin.

 

thank you all so very much for your replies. little do you know i appreciate and value all of your time and information.

later in the same day, i called them asking if they can cut it from the vin. they said no. BUT, like you said i should just go in there with all my proof and license and all, and perhaps they will respond differently.

Not to threadjack, but how does a locksmith build a key for the ignition? Do they take the tumbler apart, or even have some way of taking a mold of the tumblers w/o taking it apart? I'm really kind of curious.

Obviously getting a dealer to cut a key for you would be the absolute easiest solution, so hopefully that works out.

I'm curious about that too. Anyone know? I guess the easiest way to find out would be to call an actual locksmith and ask them... but right now it's 7:19am and I doubt any locksmiths are open now......and I'll forget about it later

I bought an ignition + keys for my 929rr for like $25 bucks shipped. It was just easier.

I did that when part of my wiring harness fried.

Amendment: Some ignition key switches contain resistors to make it more difficult to do this sort of thing. It's still possible, but requires a bit more imagination. And a wiring diagram. And a soldering iron, solder, wire, heat-shrink tubing, etc.

and with toggle switches you won't have a steering lock. But there are other imaginative ways to immobilize.
